I've owned a bike with a shock absorber stlye seatpost (see link) http://www.motormanmike.com/images/escooter/seat_post_susp.jpg
and although it worked well enough, I often found that it would loosen over time. I was having to constantly having to stop to re-adjust it and even when it was fully adjusted, it would bottom out on occasion. :bigcry:

However...
I recently discovered this seat post on the bike I just purchased. It's a SR SUNTOUR PARALLELOGRAM SUSPENSION seatpost http://www.hans-christian-schmidt.de/fp-content/images/new-post.JPG (not actual photo - will post one later) and I can't say enough about how nice it is. It gives a soft ride and holds it's adjustment very well.
Together with a springer style seat, it's one of the most comfortable rides I've ever had. I live in a heavily potholed area and this thing feels like I'm riding on a cloud. (y)
If your looking for extra comfort, you should pick one up.

I found a site that sells em. I wonder what the diameter of the seat post would be? Would it fit the older 1" bike posts?

Not sure. You might want to ask the manufacturer. They may be a bit wider than your average seatpost because the mechanisim for adjusting the stiffness is in the shaft of the post but I'm really not sure.

I think the Thudbuster seat post also uses the parallelogram. They come in a variety of diameters.
