Fighting the LAW.....Ohio

true it is sorta a hassle ,but not impossible to do,i knew someone who made their own car and got it legal, their are states where this is harder ,self assembled vehicle is way to go,a lot of people have done it here in oohiyaah.

plan on making a motorbike ,and a "motorcycle" with a +5 hp brigs type motor here in ohio

Tinman,

I am in Columbus, Ohio and am building an MB myself. I have seen several people on the OSU campus driving electric motor-assisted bicycles and today I saw my first wizzer. I don't know any of these people yet, but the Statehouse is just down the street. Add a couple of electric as well as gasoline power-assisted bikes might make the point even stronger?

right you are

the 5 horse one will be a home built motor cycle, not a motorized bike, wont have pedals just running boards

As others have said the main thing we must stress is that these machines fill the same niche as a bicycle, they in no way can compete in traffic, just because they have an extra power source doesn't change the fact that they are at heart bicycles.

true, you don't want to go too fast on them,am going to try and learn how to lace wheels soon,

Hey Tinman,

snip
In other words, Make that MB a moped. Lighting- front a rear, brake light, horn, chain guard, mirror, etc. And when ready, take it in for enhanced inspection. They give you a VIN, get some insurance, register it, and you are legal. Talk to someone with some knowledge at the state, to make sure you're doing it right.
There's a "Going Legal In Pa" thread you should check out. Similar situation here.

I brought mine to the highway patrol for a custom vehicle inspection and they laughed at me and told me to drive it onto the sidewalk and into somebody's backyard if the local cops decided to pull over a bicycle

OUPD didn't care, Athens PD said if its a bike, its a bike, and don't ride it on sidewalks because there's a city ban on it or something.

The local BMV "inspected" my 88 Fiero from PA by asking me what year it was and seeing that the vin tag matched the title.

Until somebody finds a documented procedure for this or I get hassled, I'm just riding a bicycle with a big metal thing on the back

Plus I don't think my local gov't starts to care unless there is money involved or California gets angry at the world.

I would like to hear from others that are trying to get everything registered and titled. I was going for a custom motorcycle title because I planned on going over 1 hp and 20 mph. That alone might have caused my situation because.... well... its a mountain bike with an engine, not a dune buggy or custom chopper. One might note that custom vehicle insurance is not offered by everybody and certainly is not cheap. At the very least my insurance was going to be equal that of a "real" motorcycle. The insurance company has to send out an agent to inspect the vehicle as well.

I am in Worthington Ohio, I have had my motorized bike about 3-4 years now. I had to park it as I have been stopped by the Worthington police and informed not to take it on the street. I've spoken to BMV and they refuse to budge. They say it is a Motorbike and is not on their approved list, end of conversation. Mine has been parked for 2 summers now and I doubt if I can get anywhere near what I have in it due to the laws. I will try to sell it this spring. It's a shame I have it looking like a classic Whizzer and can't ride it anymore...

Phil, did you read the first post?
If going that route fails and it were me - i would look for a clapped out moped (that IS on their list) with the proper state recognized slip ( registration or title) and it would become my motorized bike after I welded on the section of the frame that has the vin tag. Dispose of the rest of it. Would be nice to have the HD wheels and tires though.
Put all the legal stuff on your bike and register it.
