My New Find

Hind was a well known and high quality producer of bicycles, headquartered in Mumbai (Bombay). In 1980 it went into receivership and was nationalized by the Indian government as the National Bicycle Corporation of India. As late as the end of the 1990's they were producing upwards of 1,200 bicycles/day. There were questions in the ministry of heavy inductry (responsible for management of the company) in 1997-98 as regards the continuing viability of the company, and an effort began to close it down and liquidate its assetts.

That plan was successfully opposed by the work force, which proved the company had been looted of its principal equipment assetts by the management with the collusion of persons in the ministry. The resulting tribunal before the high court saw the ministry instead ordered to make good the equipment losses and to grant to the company a cash infusion to replace the losses sustained due to work slow-downs caused by removal of equipment.

Hind no longer exists as such, but most of their models of bicycles are still produced (including the bicycle taxis) in Mumbai. Excellent quality machines, rather old-fashioned designs.

Thanks for the history on the Hind Bicycle Co. I had never heard of it but I really like this old thing.

I got it for $350.00

I only got the two pix when I saw my example, and like you, the first thing I thought of was "how would I locomote this sucka?"....

The modification I thought about was the rear axle and putting heavier wheels and tires on it.

This was in May 2006 that I saw it, before the forum and before these backyard geniuses starting popping up in threads. I don't know what system you've envisioned, but Staton chain drive, with a big 4 stroke would be my first impulse.

The wheels have large spokes but the tires are size 700. I think I will try to find the widest 700's and use the original wheels.

To power it I am thinking of using the 2 1/2 greyhound with jackshaft simalar to what I did on my powered trike.

That looks Staton like, same principal. So, you ARE one of the backyard geniuses, eh?

The reason I was thinking 4 stroke was the quietness, and ability to put a bigger auxillery tank on it, say a half gallon.

I take it you'll hide it under the bench?
