Was out cleaning my car in the driveway today when I heard a motor coming down the street. I looked up and saw a guy with what looked like a trimmer motor on his rear bike rack. Looked like it was belt driven as well. Unfortunately the guy was moving pretty fast so I didn't get a good look. Looked like he was doing 30-40 mph in a 25 and he blew right through a stop sign without slowing down. Hope he didn't get stopped by the cops, they do run radar on our street quite often.

Anyway, this was on Canterbury Dr. in Sterling Hgts Michigan. If that guy is member here I would love to see your rig.

With a belt and an engine on the rear, sounds like a Golden Eagle Bicycle Engine (GEBE) rig.

...and hopefully not many of us are exceeding speed limits and blowing stop signs- poor form and dangerous.

However, just seeing one is enough to ignite the passion. I was on an antique engine website I frequent and saw a picture of an old Schwinn medium weight with one of the small Chinese 2 strokes on it...and that was enough to drive me over the edge. 18 months later, I ended up with something way more elaborate than I ever anticipated, but most people get on the road in a lot less time and hassle (no less fun).

I been through the motorcycle phase of my life, still have a number of old small hondas which I have restored. I now mostly ride a bicycle but have been thinking about putting an engine on a bike. Mostly just to putt-putt around on. I would like to have one of those electric hub motors for stealth cruising but would love to mount a weed whacker engine on an old bike just to play around on. That guy on his yesterday inspired me to look into it again.

BTW, the more I think about it the more I don't think the motored bike I saw was a Golden Eagle. It looked homemade. The belt may have been a chain since it looked like it went to the rear sprocket and not the large drive rim on typical of the Eagle.

PS. your Houghmade bike is very cool

You must have more self control than me. I saw a guy on a black Schwinn... I had one in less than two weeks.

I am happy with my bikes though... they really are on the top of a very long list of fun things I have gotten into.

The GEBE is absolutely perfect... amazingly smooth ride, and easy control. The kevlar belt seems to be superior to the chain driven system by leaps and bounds... no downside yet (as opposed to loose, oily, rough, loud chains). I didn't build one at first cause I didn't like the way they looked either. After riding the 80cc first, I can only now appreciate the GEBE kit. I got the eho35 powered kit and I LOVE IT!!! I put it on an Electra townie 1 speed and I now consider it my Lexus MB.

Oh I started researching right away, but it took 18 months to get it to finished level 1. I say that because that was last summer- now it's finished again....so what is this, HoughMade '71.2'?

Wow, Sterling Heights! what a small world. I lived there when I was a kid. On Canal Rd. haven't been back to Michigan in 26 years. Probably wouldn't recognize the old neighborhoods....

Hopefully he'll obey the rules of the road, (otherwise the MBc's will suffer).

It has grown considerably since you were here. What used to be fields are now all subdivisions. They extend considerably north of Hall road now.

wow. is Lakeside mall still around? that was a big deal for us, when it was first being built. I went to Sterling Jr. High, before leaving the state....
