Winter Gear for COLD CLIMATES

snowmobile full face helmet

My helmet is a snowmobile model. They have a couple of different things about them.

One is the face mask is double for ant-fogging. Only problem is after I got it I saw the note on the shield that it wasn't meant for street use. The reason is the plastic is not shatterproof. I guess running into a tree doesn't require a shatterproof face shield?

I ordered the standard shatterproof single layer model for riding.

The second difference is it has a removable nose and mouth "hood" like an O2 mask only open on the bottom so your breath is deflected down.

My head is big (3X helmet) and sweats a lot, so fogging is always a problem summer or winter.

No sub temps here, but after a lot of years in the desert baking, we call 60 degrees cold. )

I had looked at the snomobile helmets.
The guy at the bike shop said there alot heavier + not meant for road use + when it warms up would be too hot.
He reccommended a Dirtbike helmet and goggles.
After an hour of so of debating helmets with him i wasn't gonna buy one and got a good ski mask type hat from him.
Then i asked him about the cheapest Dirt Bike helmet he had.
So in the end he sold me a $200 dirt bike helmet for $60.
I'm not sure if he was being nice or if he felt guilty letting me ride away without a helmet.
Especially when he knew i planned to ride in the snow.
But he did know i was only trying to spend about $60.

Glad i got it keeps my head and face warm enough.
Also the Duck Bill on the top of the dirtbike helmets helps alot with the rain.
Tip your head down a little and you dont have a sheet of water running down your face sheild.

Somebody should invent Windshield wipers for those.

Windshield & boots

I also ride throught the Winter. Most cyclists today wear clipless pedals & they do poorly @ keeping your feet warm. OTOH few if any MBer's wear those silly shoes. Boots are way warmer. A windshield can make a ton of difference keeping the windchill off your face & hands. I have one I have been using for the last few years. I like to pedal & I find face shields fog up real quick. I will try & post a Pic. Does anyone else use a Windshield?

How quiet are the Conti's on bare pavement? Are the studs tungsten carbide? When I bought my Nokians, I considered the 294's but Peter Whites opinion was that the Mount and Ground was a better choice for the commuter. I put several thousand miles on these tires without losing one stud, and I was surprised at how quiet they were on bare pavement, even at a 28 to 30 mph cruise speed. I'm sure I'll get another season or two out of them. They weren't cheap but I believe you should buy the best tire you can afford. Your life may be riding on it!

the Conti's are probably not as quiet as the Nokians since they have center contact studs. the studs are T/carbide.

i never rode with them without my snow mobile helmet on so i really don't know.

i agree about buying the absolute best gear and acc's. you can possibly get, but that's not always the most expensive.
