i used to have 26x1.95 tires, then i had a sidewall break on one of the tires, and i replaced them with some cheap 26x1.5. however i like the fat tire look, and i will be shopping around for fatter tires. im running standard mountain bike rims... how much wider can i make the tires?

There isn't any "standard" width of mtn rims. IDeally you want the wider rims you can get, but most (USA) MTBs come with rims only around an inch wide. Lots of cruiser 26" rims are 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide; a couple are even wider.

As for wide tires:
the Schwalbe Big Apples at 2.3" are pretty big; they have two widths of 2" and 2.3" available. Many frames will take the 2.3" but many fenders will not--and you may have chain rubbing issues on many bikes (that is--both the pedals chain and the engine chain may rub the tire...).

There is also at least one company making a 26" x 3" tire, I forget which it is (Electra or Nirve? somebody else probably knows) but this isn't likely to fit on many frames that weren't meant for it originally. And mounting it on a narrow rim is silly anyway, because you'd have to pump the pressure up really high, which is the opposite of what you want.
