Some advice on our first motors needed. thanks

I'm looking at starting with four kits. from what ive read on here for my family the 2 strokers are the best way to go ( alot of dirt road, up hill and all around town type driving)
I see people talking alot about Happy time ( hope thats the way its said, chinese 2 strokers :)) motors being a little unreliable and .. well.. cheap.
i was hoping for some advice on our first four engine kits, we want something fairly inexpensive and fairly reliable ( i know, those two dont usualy go together)
I have a few sites that sell 2 strokers but didnt want to post them as im not sure if thats allowed.

any advice here would be fantastic.

I myself like the Chinese HT's, not because of reliability but how it is mounted. They are a toy to me and I really wouldn't have motorized bike if it had to be a rack mounted.

I have built 5 HT's, and nare a problem after the first build. The coil went out and I threw it together out of the box and blew a head gasket. The absolute, absolute most important thing is proper mounting. The second is to make a number of inexpensive out of the box modifications. Thirdly have fun.
 
thanks for the replies. the bikes are just cheap target mountain bikes, of course with the roomy open triangle space below the crotch bar. Ill have to look at the HTs, as far as how m uch to spend. i dont really know, i see them on ebay vor 150 or so, and am asuming that is the bottom rung in motors. i have to buy four of em, so i dont want to spend a glob if you know what i mean.

Before you even open the first box, read the stickies on the different associated forums...This will eliminate many of the questions you will have and the "search" function is a good friend.

Thanks AI, Whats your opinion on the HTs for rough mt bike trails? i tried to find any posts answering this and couldnt find anything on the HTs you mentioned.

ps, i should mention this is the one ive been looking at. pretty inexpensive and the sellers has a good reputation.

The bike will take it much longer then I could. I don't think real rough trails are what these HT's are cut up for. Although my son has been known to ride his on a moto cross track.

Here's my 2 cents worth. If it were me, and due to my experience with motorized bicycles, I would not buy 4 kits to start with. I recommend you do your homework, very thoroughly and decide what kind of drive you want, meaning friction drive, chain, belt, frame mount, rack mount, etc. I would proceed to build one bike and see what you and your family members think about it and go from there. As far as engines, I don’t think anyone will disagree that any of the Japanese names, be it 2 stroke or 4 stroke would be a wise choice. I also recommend centrifugal clutches, which just about all the small Japanese engines come with. Also, I paid $200.00 for my Honda GX35, delivered. That’s in the price range of the HT engines, but I bet my Honda will last a lot longer and go way more miles than those China made 2 strokes with a lot less trouble. BMP has their Friction drive kits on sale now for about $100.00. That’s what I’m using with my Honda GX 35. It has about 500 trouble free miles on it. You can get that kit along with the Honda engine for around $350.00 or maybe a little less. You mentioned you’re going to use mountain bikes. Friction drives would probably be a bad idea if you plan on trail riding. First off, knobby tread rear tires and friction drives don’t get along together to well. The smoother the tire tread, the better they work together and the longer the tire will last along with less high pitch whining noise from the friction drive roller on the tire as well. You have many good reliable options. Again just do your research and home work here on the forum or were ever. Hope this helps !
 
I would not suggest riding rough trails, etc., with a motorized bike, especially a HT kit !
 
thanks Porkchop, i should probably clarify about the trails. We live near Glacier park in Montana. so when i say trails, although steep, their all very well maintaned ( alot of them are even paved). Its not the really rough stuff that you see mountain bikers going on.
Also Porkchop, from the research ive done ( yes i know i still have a LOT of reading to do) ive settled on an engine type that will fit inside the frame. I looked at the friction drives and what you mentioned is exactly what i thought. nobs and friction dont go well together. I dont however see a japanese made engines of this type. all i could find was this site http://www.bikeberry.com/black-80cc-motorized-bicycle-engine-kit-epa-certified.html that sells engines that have Japanese ballbearings INSIDE the engine. not sure if that means their HTs or not.
as far as buying one first, the more i think about it the more I think your right. With me having no experience at all with these, and my two girls not sure how to operate one i think ill start with one and let everyone have a go at it. if you know of any chain drive, inside the frame engines that you like by all means please throw me a post or any info that i can use. till then ill keep searching.
