Sick of being asked to help fit kits

I won't help folks unless they are willing to help themselves. I used to have a lot more friends who only stopped by when they needed help with their cars (I'm a pretty handy auto mechanic with lots of tools and experience).

If someone needs a brake job, I don't get my hands dirty, I just tell then how to do it and supervise...Some of my friendsn ever visit any more :)

I feel like I can either work on bikes, or ride bikes. A local here bought a SpookyTooth, and couldn't assemble it. I assembled it for $30 an hour, and told him I'd repair it when it breaks, for $60 an hour. He hasn't brought it back to me yet.

You use the term "FRIENDS" very loosely...let's face it, they weren't friends to begin with. Friends don't use friends...been there done that. Had a (not known to me) neighbor stop by years ago. He saw that I did my own work. He asked if 1st could I build a small block chevy (I can with my eyes closed...well almost). And secondly would I help him. I asked if he wanted guidance as in word direction or actual help labor wise. He asked what the difference was...I told him....me guide him $20.00/hr...if I picked up a wrench $50.00/hr. Haven't heard a word in 10 years.

Thanks Guys for all the nice support

Well I'm going to still help people BUT make them try to do the hands on stuff under my guidance for a change , better then looking at me do it for em

Best Bobby.

"under my guidance for a change AND a CHARGE".

That "I want you to build ME something" attitude soured my love of furniture making. I refuse to have another great hobby ruined because of that oh so prevalent "entitlement" attitude in some people. It's hard to do w/o feeling like an a$$hole but just say NO! Or, turn 'em on to the Forums and let them learn for themselves.

We should be making fishermen not welfare recipients! The truth about MB's is, they won't stay running for long without maintenance, and lots of it. The best way to learn how to perform maintenance is to to actually build the machine with one's own hands. A little coaching, yes but doing it for them is a NO-NO. If one's own, self imposed limitations, leaves them incapable of building the machine, with help, then maybe they should move on to another endeavor.

you are from Milwaukee

charge a minimum fee of dinner for each help session... or a six pack an hour...

Wow .We think the same .Must be our Wisconsin upbringing.Only change I would make is ...dinner or a twelve pack. And bring a sixer to start the job.

Seriously.I try to help with anything I can,but if it takes to much time......Pay at This Window. That is what I do and I expect the same from others.

A "friend" would not stop coming by because of trying to be compensated for work done to help.

I agree with you 100% I too build furniture, cabinets, boats just about anything made of wood.Maybe they don't realize that I don't have a factory setting in my shop and it takes many hours to make something I wouldn't be ashamed of. Just getting lumber can take a lot of time. I just tell them I'm no longer able to do very much and they'd be better off just buying what they need. I'm just in the planning stages of building three tables for my living room and I figure it' s gonna take all winter if I milk it just right. (can't go back in the shop after a beer break) My bikes are all in storage until spring. I'll be taking the OCC Chopper up to Waupaca so I have one to ride when I'm up there a lot in summer. It'll be great for rides around the lakes there.
