Subaru Carb Carp ?

Technicallly speaking, if you burn enough fuel you will get deposits in the carb no matter what you do.We see carbs with yellow crystal type build up in the pump chamber. What it is must be in solution or very fine particles because even filtering the fuel the deposits still appear.

ok back to some light humor.

There really isn't much benefit in adding an inline fuel filter - assuming you have a tank with an original clunk type filter in it. The clunk filter alone should do the job (although I have had water in the fuel corrode the metal clunk which has then gunked up the carb too). There is also a small fine mesh filter inside the carb itself, but cleaning it requires a full disassembly of the carb.

The big problem I've had with these small delicate carbs is rubber deterioration/hardening caused by alcohol in the fuel, with the general secondary issue of solids in the fuel precipitating out and gunking things up over time. I've had issues with varnish and solids forming over a long period of time with float carbs, but with the little carbs the rubber issues usually crop up first.

The most consistent problem I have encountered with these small diaphragm carbs is with the flapper valve in the fuel pump section of the carb hardening and then curling up. Then it no longer pumps at full efficiency. The symptoms are cutting out at high throttle settings and an inability to hold an idle. I recommend that anyone running a 25 to 35 cc Honda or Subaru with a diaphragm carb keep a spare carb gasket or overhaul kit on hand for when they need it.

Ya know, I've been around a while, and carp in the carb was a new one on me. But, would you believe, when I cleaned the engine last time, I found two carp in my carb.

To remedy this, situation, I went to the (don't laugh) fish store and bought several line filters from the guy in the fish tank section.

Look at this picture of the carp in the fuel line ! No but seriously i just installed a new Dubro inline 1/8" filter and also they shipped a sintered brass filter for in the tank. The inline filter (aluminum) can be disassembled for cleaning and is very rugged compared to plastic.I got fed up having the carb cleaned- there must be a small particle of debris caught in the carb somewhere so i ordered a new one from Staton- they are on sale for $58 dollars-i feel it will save me futher grief ive got about 4000 miles on the engine.
