Worksman front hub and speedo drive unit?

Hello everyone, another dumb question. I purchased two, both front and rear Worksman wheels. The front one has a wider hub than the Whizzer one (look at attached pictures 006 is stock Whizzer and 008 is the Worksman) with a bearing cover sticking out far so you cannot put the speedometer gear drive unit to it. How have those of you who also purchased these wheels added the speedo drive unit? Can you pry the cover off or is there a bearing under it which sticks out further than the side of hug? Did you just not put the speedo unit on?
The pics explain what I'm talking about better than my narratives, but after viewing them I think you'll understand where I'm coming from with the questions.

Whoa, 45 hits on this and no answers? ah come on, someone out there has got to of run into this problem as I got the tip to go with Worksman rims from this site.
Come on, help a guy out here! (yes, no, maybe so). I bet if Tennessee Tuxedo was still around, me and his pal Chumley could go and see Phineas J Woopey and look on his 3 dimensional black board for the answer!

Looks like you have real problem there and I don't have a real answer for you...

Your new hub is not the heavy duty Atom type that most folks buy from worksman, so I am guessing that you might have bought the middle weight wheels as opposed to the 2.125 clincher style as found on the Industrial News Boy.

Worse case, you can re-lace your old hub into your new wheel, I found my stock whizzer hub is not that terrible, the rear though is worthless.

Bob, sorry for the late reply on this as I didn't happen upon this until now. Is your Worksman wheel one with the drum brake? If so, it looks vastly different than mine. Can you post another photo or two of the hub?

Well guess I screwed up when ordering the rims, I did not know there were 2 different kinds and when I spoke with AL at Worksman, he said he knew what rims I needed as he's sold them to other Whizzer people. But no problem, if these are the wrong ones I'll look at the sets at this site someone mentioned here after I purchased mine, www.bikeworldusa.com/product_...oducts_id/1530. Also MUCH CHEAPER! Here are some whole pictures of the front rim, funny how the brake arm is in the front of the rim rather than in the back so the brake cable is in front.

If you put the brake arm on the other side of the bike it will be behing the fork....right??

Yes, if i put it on the other side it would be in the back but then I'd have to weld a nut on the right front fork to secure the brake stabilizer bar. A simple task but another mod, and I've found that once the mods start so does the snowballing. Best to stick with original design. Does it matter that the cable is in the front? Does it draw/activate the brake shoes different?

Hi Bob ,there is a photo in my album that shows the Worksman front hub that I am using with a reproduction Monark style fork. The hub works well with the Whizzer speedo drive unit . From viewing your photos ,even if you went to this style hub, I think there may still be clearance issues due to the offset in the suspension tube on your fork leg and the diameter of the Whizzer speedo drive ring. The photo in my album just gives you a look at something you may wish to investigate.

Hi Bob, that is definitely a different front hub than the one Worksman used on my wheel. I wonder if Worksman would exchange it for the other style?
The wheel you mentioned that BikeWorldUSA has is a very good wheel for the price. I've used some on builds before. But the spokes are not quite as heavy as the Worksman spokes. Also, the front wheel does not have a drum brake, or any brake at all for that matter. Attached is a photo of my Whizzer taken from the front, and hopefully it hasn't been automatically resized too small to see the type of hub used on mine.

Okay I see mine is not the same as yours, I should have investigated further on the rims before ordering them. I assumed Al would have known what rims I needed as he said he's sold them for whizzers. You can see the difference in the brakes on yours, mine is very small. But I'm stuck with it and it will work. I have access to my old milling machine so i might be able to make a speedo drive unit up. Thanks for the information and photo.
