Its a mess... theres no good reason for the average China doll or 4 stroke equipt M/B to be illegal here in NY.
A few years back in there was a flood of those cheap 2 stroke sit on scooters that hit the market, of course the kids went crazy for them and a few got hurt, and of course the city clamped down on ANY THING with a motor on it that wasn't registrable, there for open to registration fees, insurance, and needed a license to ride.
Those little scoots were dangerous, and the state has a point, there should be some kind of registration process, safety inspection and licensing needed.
Some people just refuse to ride safely and obey the rules, enforcement of some kind is needed.
But as usual they throw baby out with the bathwater, and outlaw ANY non registrable motorized vehicle just to save them selves the trouble of having to enforce any new codes.
The DMV has its head stuck in cement on this subject, no one who works there will touch the subject, they just keep quoting the regulations and sticking there fingers in there ears going "LA LA LA LA LA , I cant hear you".
But things have changed up a bit, I saw a gas station sign in lower Manhattan yesterday that said $4.24.9.
for Mobil premium gas. YIKES!
By the end of this summer I expect to see that price closer to $6 dollars a gallon.
Bet on it.
We need to conserve fuel, we need to get around.
I think its time the legislators in Albany get the wake up call, we need some new legislation to allow for home built motorized bicycles.
We need to contact our representatives and insist on legislation to make M/Bs legal.
One voice can be ignored, ten voices, a hundred... but if we (all M/B riders) speak as one we can effect change.
The china girls all get over 100 MPG, we need that kind of economical personal transport
I've been seeing more and more new mopeds on the streets, more resurrected old 70s mopeds, more electric bicycles(very popular with delivery guys) and I've even seen a few rack mounted 4 strokes running around... If they (the state) really want to they could give the home builts VIN numbers and make them legal after passing an equipment check and registration.
I had to buy an old moped with its papers, guess how much of it I used in my new build? Try just the registration plate, I had to stamp the old engines and frames numbers on my new engine (illegal by the way) and pass the bike off as a regular moped that had been modified.
I HAD to break the law to complie with there regulations.
This makes no sense to me at all.
I call on all New York State M/Bers,
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES IN ALBANY, insist on legislation changes, it CAN BE DONE, but we have to take some initiative here, freedom isn't free, no ones going to just hand it to us, we have to become involved or our Hobby/Sport/Art dies.
