Just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for the couple dozen threads i've read to figure out how i'm going to go about my backyard build.
Firstly i wanted to use a starter i replaced on my car when i first got it and has just been sitting in my garage. Talking to my neighbor about it and seeing if he could score me a couple car batteries from his work since they swap them out of trucks regularly and are still in great shape, he decided to keep an eye out for them and until then give me a 32cc eager beaver weed wacker he had sitting in his garage for quite sometime. I have yet to get it running or fully taken apart since i cant get the clutch off. i've had it run for 5 seconds a couple times but the pull start stopped working and i have to use a small allen wrench in the spindle to wind it back up. but i cant figure out how the clutch comes off exactly. will try to get pics up sometime today to explain it.
I have 4 bikes with my latest addition of a magna mtn bike i picked up for $6 at a yard sale with a bent rear wheel and a few broken spokes. The engine will more than likely go on my favorite bike being a Raleigh M-80 i found over a year ago at a yard sale for $15. Already have a 12 function bike comp on it and is in great running shape. Maybe just a disc brake setup when i find a good deal on one. A free surface rusted up peugot mtn bike frame now with road wheels and a 69 Schwinn varsity rounds out the collection.
I plan on using a friction drive setup with the angle iron mounts. 2 going down and being u-bolted to the rear triangle of the frame and also 1 going laterally to the down tube of the frame and u-bolted there. I want a clutch system to pull the engine off the wheel and lock into position there for quick access to change spindle sizes if possible(my commute to school is steadily uphill(north) and almost completely flat(east)). A spring to the rear mount should bring it back to desired tension as well. I'll try to do a drawing of it if i get the chance for scrutinizing and fault findings. Hopes are 25-30 mph on the flat and 20 uphill with pedaling would be nice. Thinking a 1.5" diameter spindle might do the trick on flat and 1" for uphill.
I have a 90 Taurus SHO that i thoroughly enjoy driving but cant afford insurance or satisfying its thirst any longer... looking to get 80-100+mpg vs 18mpg as soon as possible.
Later i also want to use the starter i have for a solar bike project and i found places to plug into 120v at school so a small float charger would help it out there. Reducing its power will be job one for range and a pulsing power rather than continuous should help greatly. Only meant to sustain top speed and pedaling up to that point is the goal.
