If you have to ask ....
then you do not have the skills you need to build lace and true a wheel...

i dont mean to be rude or start a feud... but you havent contributed anything to this this thread other than poo-poo what james and i have said. You obviously dont have the information i'm seeking, all of your responses have been focused on proving that i dont know what im doing (which should have been blatantly obvious, as its why i posted the thread). So if you dont ACTUALLY have any help to offer, kindly stop belittling those who are actually putting forth effort to help me. the only progress that had been made was before you jumped in and began harassing. I'm looking for help, not disrespect

if you're planning on re-lacing the o.c.c. hoop with a disk brake ready hub, i'm pretty sure that any hub with the right number of spoke holes will work.
sometimes there will be different axle widths and diameters tho.
Your best bet in my opinion is to measure the width of the existing o.c.c. hub, axle width and axle diameter. Then try to find a hub with the same number of spoke holes, dimensions, axle width and diameter that has a disk brake flange machined into it.
I personally have never changed out a hub , laced a wheel or trued a wheel so i'm just guessing based on what i am thinking.
I'm thinking that the hardest part will be mouting the caliper bracket in the right position so that the caliper and brake pads line up with the disk correctly.

Front forks with v brake conversions can be had for 50 bucks, would it be worth it at all to spend twice that on disc brakes? would the benefits really be that noticeable?

v brakes are ok, but if you want excellent stopping power, disks is the way to go.
