I don't want to pay a fortune but would like to know where I can get a good gear cable and brake cable cutter's that don't Frey the ends?

Quality pliers type cable cutters are not cheap and even they get dull. If you have a rotary tool, use it with a diamond cut-off wheel. I've found that to be better anyway, no fraying or distorting the housing, a nice clean and exact cut every time.

+ 1 .

Quality pair of dykes will do, like channel lock or klein.

I prefer the Dremel tool, for a clean cut. I coat the wire with a thin bead of epoxy , and let cure , before cutting,
cut right through the epoxy, and you have a cable that won't unravel. Cutting pliers often pinch the cable, a finish
nail in a pair of vice grips reforms cable end, allowing inner wire to pass through.

Good ideas!
