So I'm looking at building a bike this winter. Currently I have a gt5 on a schwin ranger mountain bike.

I picked up an old steel framed huffy 10spd road bike that I want to put the engine on.

The project will be based on this: take my mongoose xr-200 and put the forks and wheels on the old huffy . Then I'll have front suspension, front discs and alloy wheels. Also widen the handle bars a smudge.

Next goal is I want this thing to do 30-35 and be reliable. What's the best way to do this and not get too over zealous with mods and such? I'm ok with a single speed bike.

I'm 240# and Iv had the ranger doing 30 ready with nearly everything stock. Jag cdi and gutted muffler are the only mods.

It's just more difficult to control a bike while riding "in the drops". A fall while in the drops is far more likely to result in a face plant.
If you are an experienced drop handlebar rider, it may not be a problem for you.
Johnny Tomac used to race his mountain bike with drop handlebars installed. He was also a road racer, and wanted to maintain the same riding
position on the road bike and mountain bike. End of ancient history lesson.

I would say both. It may be tough to mount all the necessary stuff on narrow bars (throttle, clutch lever, mirror, speedo, lights, etc).
The drop bars would look cool, but could make controlling the motorbike in traffic difficult.

No harm in giving them a try and seeing how you like them. I don't think I'd enjoy that riding posture. But you're young still and you might be able to get away with it.

I'm a bit worried about your wider wheel and tire fitting into the rear chainstay. I've manged to shoehorn wide stuff into those frames before. But it just doesn't work on some.

I'm also worried about the 30 mph thing. I know there's folks who do it. But I'd be afraid of the bike breaking at such speeds. And unless your roads are pretty smooth, it's liable to beat you to death. Don't let me discourage you. Just approach such speeds carefully.

As far as weeks go, I was thinking about just changing the hubs over. Just by looking at them they appear about the same with (rim wise) but the hubs are deff larger on the mongoose.

The huffy may be different the the ranger I'm currently using, but 28-30 really doesn't feel bad. 18 is about as fast as u can pedal though and that's still cranking. Front suspension sure held soak up the cracks in the road.
