Hello all, I recently purchased a 66cc kit from bikeberry.com, I have mounted it, and did the standard replacement of nuts and bolts. I bought a spring loaded chain tensioner off of Ebay, and it mounts on the "swingarm" ( I dont know the proper name, the horizontal bar that comes from the "dropout area"). Only problem is that when I pedal and then attempt to start the engine, the chain gets stuck inside the clutch cover, due to it having too much slack. I tried the tensioner that came with the kit, but I ended breaking two spokes so I said screw it. photo 1.jpgphoto 2.jpgphoto 3.jpg

by looking at those pics it looks like you can adjust taht tensioner for more tension. kind of like you would do with the "stock" tensioner. id try that first, put more tension on it so you have about 1/2" of play on the top chain and see what that does for you!

possibly the excessive angle of the engine has something to do with it (if the chain is catching on the engine casing at the bottom).
you might try mounting it more level.
make sure the rear sprocket is mounted to keep the chain in line with the countershaft sprocket. the rear sprocket is beveled so you can have it more "outward" or more "inward".

not sure, but I'm thinking that a spring-type tensioner should be tight with no play in the chain, as the play will come in thru the spring when needed

Drill a hole next to the slot up high and mount the pivot bolt thru it. Leave the bolt loose enough that it can move when needed. That should cure your troubles.

take a couple links out of the chain and adjust so there is some space between the coils in the spring as you have it now the spring is doing nothing

rigid frames do not have swing arms you put the tensioner on a chainstay

If I take out one link , the chain doesnt reach, but I presume it will be just the right tightness. How can I pull the chain together and put the masterlink without going out and buying a chain puller?

Thanks for the quick responses

I still think u should loosen the pivot bolt and slide the tensioner up the slot untill u achieve proper tension. And then re tighten the pivot bolt. That is assuming u can tighten the pivot bolt and it will still pivot of course!
