Im about to start a new big build. My question lies in the brakes. Im going to be putting a disc brake on the front of this bike. This would be my first set of them. What kind of disc brakes are people using? Anybody have success with some of the ebay kits from hong kong? I am aiming at some of the AVID kits, but there are also a lot of choices of those. Hydraulic or mechanical? Any feedback?

I am using the mechanical Avid BB7 200 mm disc on the front and 180 mm for the rear of my new build they are quite good as they come with a lot of mounting bracket options to fit almost anything. It mounted on my monark forks with no problems.

Thanks Roy. Yeah I'm leaning twoards the avids but there's so many different styles of them as well. Any particular reason you have a 180 in the front? Seems like 160 is the more common size.

The 180 is on the rear I'm using 200's on the front, the reason I'm using them instead of the 160 is I had Shimano 160 on my downhill racer and they didn't pull up to good, so I thought if I went bigger on this build it should be a lot better to cope with a motor. I won't know how good it is till it is all completed hopefully my frame will come back next week from the powder coater so I can assemble it together.

Hydraulic's are a pain in the butt depending what kind of bike you are building.

TRP Brakes makes a hybrid called the HY/RD that is cable to the caliper, and Hydraulic inside.
They worked great on this Surley with a dual pull brake lever.

Nice looking build KC.

Thanks Wayne.
That was a custom job for a customer.
He wanted a mule with a top speed of 15~20MPH that would climb a sheer cliff with no gears.

Jackshafted it to keep the disc brake and just one big sprocket on the hub.

He loves it ;-}

KC, as one of many who value your opinion concerning many aspects of motored bikes, I'm curious if you're seen or have used this sprocket disk brake device. It appears that after removing the rear brake disk, the sprocket is mounted on to the hub, and the brake disk on to the sprocket via an adapter. If this does in fact work, it would solve my current dilemma of running a left side chain and still using the factory disk brake.

My concern is that the rear hub is not up to the task withstanding engine torque, even though they are designed to take years of stopping power. Do you have any experience with this adapter? Thanks, Steve
