I know my kit gets its lubrication from the gas oil ratio (20:1) but would it hurt to take off the cylinder and put a teaspoon of two stroke oil in the crankcase once in a while?

20 to 1 is a lot of oil.

32 to 1 or 4 oz to a gallon is more than enough oil.

There will be residual oil in your crankcase right now.
There is no need to add more or take anything apart.

When I get a new motor that has been sitting around and
I am not going to open it up before it gets run for the first
time.

I put a little oil in the spark plug hole with an eye dropper.

Take the intake off and put the eye dropper under the piston
with the motor upside down so it goes inside the piston to get
oil on the upper needle bearing.

Turn the motor over by hand using the nut on the magnet to
work the oil down the cylinder wall and oil the rings.

You don't need to add too much and all that oil will drip
down to the crankcase and bearings.

Of course a new motor being assembled get all the parts oiled
with 2 stroke oil.
