I recently came across an add on Craigslist for a motorized bicycle kit for $150. Started looking into it and have not looked back! So far I have fully assembled my kit and I'm about 1/2 way through the break in process. Now my focus is to make it street legal for California. If everything goes well I'll be on the road in a couple weeks.

California is known for ever changing laws Gather info from many sources, filter it out later. Where you ride is important, quiet back streets, or busy city highway ? Cops do not bother people on back roads, the city is another story, if one cop overlooks you, the other may decide to write you up. How you ride is important too .

Yeah I've been reading up on the laws for a couple weeks and there is more to it than I anticipated but I think I got it.

-helmet
-head light
-brake light
-license plate
-left side mirror
-m2 license

I have mailed off for the reg, I have an appointment Monday with the DMV to get my m2 permit, just need to wire up lights.

Forget about an M2. Just get an M1 then you can ride any 2 wheeler.

It is the same written test and skills test.

I wouldn't sweat the brake light too much and it's a DOT helmet.

Where do you live in CA?

Hmm well if it's all the same test what the point of two different classifications... California...

Yeah I was unsure about if I really needed functioning brake lights, but I picked up some mini momentary switches that I'll install into my brake handles, I enjoy fabricating things so why not.

I'm in San Jose ca

I live in Campbell, and have not been stopped by the police so far. I stop at all stop signs and keep a low profile. My bike is registered, and I passed the written motorcycle test. The riding skills test requires that you have insurance on your bike. If you show up with a moped, you are trying for a M2 license. If you show up with a motorcycle, you are trying for a M1 license. I am thinking about going to a CHP motorcycle training facility for $250. That way I get a m1 and won't buy insurance until I get pulled over on my bike, which I hope will never happen.

Thanks for the feedback! I also plan to obey traffic laws and keep a low profile, Cruise the back roads around my house. For now I'll be getting just my m2 permit. It will allow me to hit the road, but no night riding. Is it possible to use a motorized bike to pass the riding skills test? If so I'll show up with it in my truck. Also from my understanding a motorized bike is not required to be insured, but it's all new to me so I could be wrong.

I am getting mine ready for the test. It has brake lights, dual mirrors ,turn signals, running lights. horn and headlight with high/ low beams. I would rather have the M1 , but just in case I change my mind and buy insurance, I will then be ready to go. I don't know if they will give the test on a grubee, but it does have the license plate, so they really can't refuse.

What are you going to say if the DMV asks you for your insurance?
Let us know how it goes.

There are lots of people with Ruckus type bikes on craigslist that you can
rent to take the skills test for your M1 license.
