Gentle folk all,
Having delved deep into this forum archive with less than satisfactory results I would appreciate those with specific experience to give me/ us some input.
History;
Having just completed a 4stroke 49cc Huffy- Davidson build and now have 40 miles on it.
I have read enough about Huffy coaster brakes that I need to either up grade the coaster brake w/ new coaster brake or put that upgrade off for awhile and look to disk braking the front wheel. The Monark type II is very attractive in a nostalgic way. The up grade looks to cost $300+ and if it would improve my safety and ride comfort may offset the cost.
Replies Please.

Well you have several choices, the main of which is rigid or suspension. For suspension you can use springer or MTB style forks. For rigid you can use regular style forks or triple tree. As far as I've seen you can get springers with mounts for disc brakes and hub but that's it. I haven't seen any with V brake mounts. Different MTB suspension forks have disc, V and cantilever mounts, some have all three. Rigid forks can be found with all three types of brake mounts but the triple tree style have usually just disc brake mounts similar to the springers. Figuring out whether you need 1" or 1 1/8", threaded or threadless steerer tube will limit your selection as well.

If you decide to get the springer and equip the disc brake mount you'll have to get a front rim with a disc brake hub too and the actual brake hardware. If you went with a MTB suspension fork you could find one with V brake mounts and still be able to use your stock front rim.

That's my 2 cents :)

What springier do you? I have a Schwinn with a springier and even thaw it is not disc I have seen people put friction brakes on them. Yes I agree a front brake is needed even thaw I have well over a gallon throw mine with out a front brake that is the next thing on my list. Here is a picture of a spring like mine with friction brakes I go off eBay. Let us know what you come up with.

You have to make sure you get the right caliper. I use friction brakes as disc brakes all so have calipers. I bought a caliper before I had the bike but when the bike got here it does not fit. I think I am going to go by a bicycle shop with it and see if they have whit I need. Right not cannot do much do to being in the hospital. I am home now.

Here is mine.

Seems I have started a good thread, that said more input and please reference the opening thread.
For you who have responded, I mounted a front side pull brake before the engine went in and it works.
Being 65yrs old I am trying to take a bit of shock out of my riding experience and improve my braking
at the same time.
I am a motorcyclist with a 1950 FL Harley and a 1979 BMW RS/80 so I just want empirical data to work with.

A tad bit off topic but for my next build (electric)I am planning to build a vintage style with springer forks. I'm curious to how those forks handle at any speed.lets say around 30mph and are they actually functional.
Nice bike by the way. I'm a die hard motorcyclist turned into a motored bicyclist and now electric bicyclist.
Just love to tinker and experiment.
Good luck!
Mike
