Novice- What is this?

I realize there will be updated parts needed for the longevity of the engine and that these China motors come with some low quality parts. BUT shouldn't it be enough to get it running? Latest problem... The spark plug boot doesn't stay on. That's kind of an essential function.

Next question, how do I keep my favorite 20 yr old guy away from my bike? I had hoped my son would have taken an interest in the project but he didn't. That is until last night when his car broke down and he wanted to ride it to work. Now he is too helpful and wants to touch stuff! I tried explaining that it is dangerous to ride especially if not built right but he knows everything of course.

How can I get him to help me without ending up with a junk motor? And get him to understand there's a break in period that is of uber importance? I'm asking you males that likely thought your moms were clueless once upon a time too... ;)

Actually Holly, maybe a better air filter and for most engines, slightly leaner jetting, but they do pretty good as is. I got well over 1000 miles on mine at tremendous high rpm before I had a serious problem, a wristpin clip breaking.

My mom was a whiz at her jobs. I was amazed at what she accomplished. My similar age son however is only just beginning to appreciate my abilities. "Familiarity breeds contempt" they say. You just have to get out and put a couple hundred miles on the bike before he gets ahold of it!

I am really thinking of trying Maxima 927 Castor oil in my next cylinder break-in. I think it would do well in these engines.

I'd have to get it running first but that was my plan. It's the first time in my life I thought, I've turned into my father!

He's stormed off already stating he's not touching the bike ever again.

Thanks for the reassuring words! I'm about ready to throw in the towel (for the 5th time). Time to walk away and empty my noggin.

I haven't got it running. The clutch was locked up but I fixed that yesterday.

The pedal doesn't clear the muffler. That's really the only thing left to figure out before I attempt to start her up.

Though fuel would help, but that's just a matter of actually going to the gas station.

So muffler ideas welcome. Keep in mind that I don't have a work shop full of tools though. This is happening in my livingroom. Since my incredible physical strength has not worked to bend it, I've considered hammering a ding in it. I only need a fraction of an inch to clear it and I plan on upgrading that in the near future. So ding or not?

Hi Holly,

I'm a newbie and cannot answer your question about dinging the muffler. All I can suggest is maybe swapping the pedals out for some that are smaller maybe?
Anyways, I just wanted to say good luck with the build, and bump your topic back up to the top of the thread list!

Cheers
Kev ;)

It looks great! :) I love the colour. Black and Red! looks awesome.

I purchased my bike assembled, but I plan on building my own onto a chopper bicycle.
Threads like yours, as well as the helpful people here have given me the confidence to give it a go. :)
