CVT What are today's thoughts on the use of CVTs?

I'm Just wondering what your thoughts on the use of a CVT is...

It's a ctv, it comes with the advantages of one, mine works great for sure. Far easier to work with compared to any derailleur system and rivals transmissions with set gears since you can always have the "just right" gear that will be compatible with your power curve.

NuVinci is probably the best option since it's already directly compatible with a bicycle, with a jackshaft you can take full advantage of it. Easily the best bang for the buck I've installed in a bike, especially because I never had to deal with derailleur adjustments and the fact that I could upgrade to an incredibly tough single speed BMX chain that avoids all the problems of multiple hp being pulled through a thin and flexible chain.

Perhaps I could even argue that the hobby felt a bit more boring without the challenge of upkeeping a derailleur system.

Haha, lame... What a shame, do you mean boring? Without the challenge of the constant upkeep of a derailleur, I could see it as boring, but in exchange for the necessity of upkeep for the darn motor you just put on the bike, it's a fair exchange.
I'm glad though that someone here likes 'em. Thanks Frankenstein the other bike forums hate on these things... I know it's a slight loss of power, but really, with a CVT in addition to the right gearing, how bad could it be?

People say these things cause a loss of top speed, but with the right gearing to compensate for the final reduction of a CVT, I'd think it'd could cause an increase top speed..

I guess it's just unacceptable to put a more powerful motor in the bike or something nowadays... If your going to pick a China girl may as pick one that would blow your mind, why go with some 1.5 hp if you could dress it up a bit, as long as she can handle all those horses under her then all should go well.

I think the Nuvinci has a 360% range? So that's like a 10t to 36t rear cassette?
But I have a 11t to 36t cassette and a 30,42,52t triple front chainset.

Yeah that thread isn't very relevant, but since you pointed out engine mod for more power, I thought it was funny to see an engine mod thread in related....

Divie it up as much as you'd like, the power behind it is still small, though at much more than human strength and no real need to hold a canter so the second gearset is pretty much unneeded. If you plan to pedal almost as much as motoring then you could benefit from the crankset gears. When I was a kid I was completely happy with an oversized 3 speed bicycle, I can settle with just the rear 7 on a motorized bike though I did opt for three infinite number of gears all in one package deal since it eliminated the kinda want/need for a front shifter. It could in fact just as accurately and even better keep you in whatever canter on just about any surface and most payloads if you are fit enough..
