Mag Wheels

The only solution I can come up with is the Mr. Moneybags method. Buy the mags, buy some wide rims, have the mags machined down and weld the rims to 'em. Shouldn't be a problem for someone who's used to welding aluminum (TIG would be best), but you'd want to do it on a jig (which you'd have to build) to make sure everything stays straight. While you're welding, close up the spoke holes so you can run tubeless. Then, since you're already into it for a grand, take the wheels back to the machine shop and run 'em in a lathe to clean up the welds. Hell, have 'em anodized while you're at it, at this point what's another hundred bucks?

Then, six months after you do all this, somebody will come out with wide alloy wheels and you can kick yourself.

Ha! that sounds about right.

Okay, I was just looking at these from Outlaw Motorized Bicycles, a place I never heard of before, have you ever done biz with them? They have "HY-27 style 26" CNC magnesium/aluminum alloy mags for $140. They look like they are slightly different than the Gasbike ones that they call "HY-22". I wonder which one is the strongest less prone to cracking. They both have the same width.

The hy-27's have a thin spoke with center web and the hy-22's have thick spoke and web much thicker.

I have a pair of the hy-22's. The black with red stickers. I got them before gasbike hiked the price big time. $140 now when they were $99. Peeled off the cheesy white luyu stickers. I think they make bikes have a more mopedy look. Has anyone encountered the stock chinese bearings failing? it seems simple enough to punch the old ones out and source some japanese bearings. The only reason I haven't used the rear mag is the spacers were uneven cut seamed tubing and I don't trust those.

Ha! If they were still $99, I would have already ordered a pair. When did you get them? How many miles you got on them? Did you check out the bearings?

The reason for the bearing failures is the axle doesn't have a shouldered stop for the inner race. This allows to much pressure to be put on the inner race, and binds the bearing causing pre mature failure. I use a piece of aluminum tubing on the axle to keep the inner race form being compressed to a lesser dimension than the outer race stops in the hub.

Which one of the 3 mag wheels that you got is the best, or would you say that they are about the same?
