Hyper Crusier/ Zeda case reed build

This build is kinda odd for me. I typically don't start any project with all new parts. Most of my stuff is but with old junk and some new stuff. That's how I picked the screen name.

My last bike (first MB) was fun but had all kinds of problems with the Seeutek. Bearings went, then it broke a ring, next was wrist pin bearing failure that cracked the piston dome and then the final catastrophic lean the took out the entire top end which was caused by a broken carb. The bike itself also had issues with the derailleurs and brakes due to riding in the winter. Needed a repaint as well. Fvck that. This time I'm starting new.

So....
I decided this bike was going to be a single speed cruiser with disc brakes to solve my biggest issues with the bike itself. Hard combo to find. Found the Hyper at Wallmart by chance and it was cheap, real cheap. Comes with coaster brakes. No big deal, I like building rims and this way I can have exactly what I want. Besides the rims The only other things that needed to be changed are the pedals and handle bars. The bars are like 3' wide WTF. With my BMX background platform pedals is all I'll ride. Both of those issues have been taken care of.

For the engine I picked Zeda because a lot of people seem happy with them. Knew I wanted a reed for the power curve and I ended up going overboard and ordering the Zeda 80 case reed and a MZ65 pipe at the same time. Ship date is between 3/14 and 3/21.

Parts acquired so far:
  • Single speed disc hubs
  • Disc rotors and calipers
  • KMC Z510 chain
  • ODI grips
  • Dual brake lever
  • Matching clutch lever
  • Narrow 10 sprocket from BMW
  • CNC throttle
Parts to be ordered:
  • Huffy Davidson Lightning Strike CDI
  • Disc Drive sprocket adapter and 410 36t sprocket from MBRebel
  • OZ super magneto
  • 12g spokes and nipples
  • Double wall rims
  • Lighting

^^^still no leak (y)

Starting on the new tank today. Going with flat sides this time to make it simpler. Using 18g (I think) steel this time .

Been a little bit since the last post. Ordered and received all the parts for the tank. Destroyed 3 kit tanks in the past couple of weeks. They don't like that top bar and the vibes. Picked up a horrible vibration and figured the wrist pin bearing was going bad. Turned out it was the weld on the stinger broke. No big deal. Decided to move the pipe in tighter to the frame and also came across a piece of tube with a nice radius. As I was piecingthe pipe together I noticed it. The one thing I didn't want to see was right there glaring at me. A crack in the seat tube! s**t! It's a perfect straight line. Remember those vibrations I mentioned, pretty sure that is the cause. The roads here are nice and smooth and I don't do dumb s**t like ride off curbs. So now I'm looking for a cruiser frame or may just get a Worksmen News Boy. Going to hit up the flea market next weekend. I'll start a bew thread for the next build. Anyway, here is a picture of the pipe and weed wacker tank..lol

Thanks. The next one should be pretty good since I can weld steel. Also learned a lot from this build. Mostly how to make a fast, safe and somewhat dependable bike. I'm kinda sad but also excited. Think I'll hang this frame on the wall.

so sad! but I know now to gusset the seat tube, I always thought the Hyper was more sturdy than most others. Workmans start at like 250 new? hope you can find a good used one!
idea for roached out frame - cut bottom of the V out and make a bench engine mount out of it

Turns out my boss has access to a tig so we may try to fix it. I worry about possible other damage that hasn't shown itself yet. Still plan to get a steel frame, probably the worksman, to put the go fast stuff on. Going to hit a big flea market tomorrow and maybe I'll stumble on something cool.

Sucks, was looking forward to the tank you were making. Was a nice looking build. Think about banging a seat post down the seat tube to reinforce the crack before welding? I thought the hyper cruiser was steel.

Couldn't you just cut a seat post short enough to slide down inside the tube while spaning the crack and still being short enough to get your functioning post in. Then weld the crack? The reason I ask is because I have ran into the same problem on a customers bike and this is how I solved it. I guess it depends where the crack is. The one I fixed was right at the rear engine mount so it took some grinding to get the mount to fit clean.
