Tinkering with stock exhaust

Would the stock exhaust, that comes with a 2 stroke kit, offer any performance gains if gutted and then a small engine muffler added to end to act as a silencer? Would it have an expansion chamber effect with out be obnoxiously loud?

You can gain some torque and better flow by modding the stock pipe and some scavaging does occure but I wouldnt call it performance gain rather an improvement over stock.

It's not that i haven't searched for this, it's i haven't really found any consistency to the information I've found, any specific recommendations how to mod appreciated

Depends on witch pipe you have,there are a few different ones.
 
So i need to cut it open and go from there?

Gutting it and adding a muffler is not advised?
Most of them have simular internals but some are sealed up and some have a removable end cap,some have a paladium converter aswell,this diagram shows how most are configured. If you remove both baffle plates and cut the main outlet tube off above the little holes,then cut the stinger tube down to about an inch they flow much better and aren't too loud.Some whom want increased flow will add small 3/16 ths to 1/4 inch in the bottom etheir side of the stinger.

So remove paladium material if present, cut out baffles, cut "header tube" above holes labled "exhaust exits", cut "stinger" 1 inch above removable end cap?

Header pipe and stinger pipe will not overlap and should end up with about a 2-3 inch gap between end of header pipe and start of stinger?
 
My suggestion would be to just cut the stinger. The reason for this is because the exhaust with the 3 holes usually has a washer welded over the end of it with the bolt used to secure the end cap welded to the washer.
