Getting an M1 or M2 in CA

Pretty sure it is under 150cc needs an M2, registration and plate; 150cc+ needs an M1, registration, plate, insurance and inspection.

I noticed something about craigslist it’s mainly Harleys and non road legal dirt bikes for sale. That’s your best bet though unless you have 8k for a brand new bike. I think I like cafe racers but I don’t like too much chrome and don’t need a 1000cc either.

Nope,
Under 150cc needs an M1 and exactly the same as 150cc and over. M1, registration, plate, insurance.

Under 150cc is called a Motor Driven Cycle but is still a Motorcycle that can't go
on the freeway.
You haven't seen this on the freeway entry signs?
I quoted the CA laws on post 13 but none of you read?

M2 is only mopeds, motorized bicycles and bicycles with attached motors with a 4 hp limit.

There’s 150’s that go highway speed heck a 50cc scooter with a 100cc big bore kit can hit 60mph. How much does it cost to get a class M anyways? Are they picky about your feet? What if it has an auto clutch but say a 250cc scooter?

See the thing about highways is the other traffic. The speed limit here in the freeway is 70 but i wouldn't take anything on there that wouldn't go 80 easily. Also weight. When you pass a semi or a semi passes you at 75 there is an incredible amount of wind that will blow a bicycle right off the road. It's not bad on my 600lb goldwing but i would never take my brother in law's 400 down the interstate because of how light it is even though it will go 90. When you go over 50 the wind can really effect any two wheeled machines.

Yeah, respect for the wind is why I have no greed for speed on one of these. I was a hard-core bicyclist once.

Going over 50 in an old Volkswagen down I-5 in Cali on a windy is bad enough. Once had a Yamaha Riva 180 scooter that would do 65 if I ducked low enough. Took it on the freeway a few times in SoCal. That was "fun" now that I've lived through it. Rather be doing over 50 on a Scout Sixty tho.

I've had a blast riding 50mph+ on these things, but I agree, its only fun as I look back while still in one piece. Any time I get above 30 around cars it's more fear than fun. I worry that my front tire might overheat and blow while riding. That's happened twice as I pulled into a gas station after long rides, excessive rim brake use heats the tires up tremendously and makes the psi spike above max pressure. I ride about midway between min and max now, no issues since. Not sure why it didn't fail while riding other than the wind cooled it off, sitting still had no wind... my best guess. Holy crap is it scary riding next to a bus or semi truck at high speeds, their turbulence has me wrestling the handlebars to continue in a straight line.
I'm honestly about to do like you and gear for 35ish just for the sake of the bicycle components and my health while riding on the street, till race day at least. Wonder if i can just force myself to ignore 3rd gear?

Have you tried running a 203 in the front? all you need is an adapter and the disc. On my next build i'm using a shimano disc and post mount adapter with a suntour front shock. Kinda overkill for a 49cc bike but it should work good. Was think of converting rear to use a 180mm disc if the caliper can bolt up. I've heard the shimano stainless discs and resin pads work perfect.
