On October 21 I was riding my China-converted old Schwinn down an ordinary bumpy street. What I remember was a loud bang and I was lying in the street. Paramedics took me to the hospital, then to a bigger hospital, where they fixed my broken neck (first cervical vertabra, repaired with a 3" vertical bolt threaded up my spine, plus a broken collarbone, plus seriously stretched nerves. After four days in the hospital I've been recovering at home, living on lots of pain killers.

The bike was taken in by the local police, and it's only in the last few days that I've learned what actually happened by inspecting the bike. Witnesses said that I flew over the handlebars, and that happened because the front wheel solidly locked up at maybe 15mph. The wheel locked up because a single rivet that held the top front fender brace failed, allowing the U shaped brace to flop around and ultimately contact the tire tread. The tire wrapped the fender brace around the axle/fork junction, thus winching the brace tight against the tire tread. It's still immovable, and when I feel better I shall post some pictures.

I'm posting this to several groups. I was wearing a bike helmet, which might or might not have saved my life: the side of the helmet was scraped away by the road surface, as was skin on my shoulder. You may be familiar with the forged-steel Schwinn fork: mine is thoroughly bent, and a pedal broke off with a piece of the crank still attached.

It saddens me, but I won't be rebuilding the bike, though the engine and the rest are okay. I'll likely be buying a lightweight motorcycle, which makes a better vehicle in general for someone my age, which is 72. I'll also be buying a lightweight bicycle to help get my strength back.

Moral: Inspect your bike every time you ride it, for any motorbike will vibrate itself to pieces after a very short time. Until Honda and them began making better bikes in the '60's a pre-ride inspection was standard for all riders, and now I know why. Yes, mine was an old bike, but new ones aren't necessarily built so well either.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Thanks for sharing with us what to look out for when it comes to mounting the front fender.
Most know to use a center mount and two fender brace mounts with front fenders because of this reason.
Most modern Beach Cruisers front fenders come with one fender brace mount. These bicycles are intended to be used as a bicycle.
When making your bicycle a motorized bicycle always use a center mount and two fender braces with front and rear fenders.
The wheels and brakes should be upgraded too.
I'm so sorry you found out the hard way.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures

I posted a newspaper report on a fatality a bit ago from a front fender malfunction on a motorized bike. I'm sorry you faced nearly the same circumstance, I wouldn't know what to do in the 1/5th of a second or less you have to react.

Many many people recommend to remove at least the front fender from a bicycle for that exact reason - a lot of scary pics on my computer of fender failures!

After reading dozens of these fender horror stories I’m convinced that it is the “loop” design of the fender braces that needs to be absolutely eliminated should a person choose to run fenders. Even something as simple as cutting a loop brace in 2 before reattaching the individual pieces with proper quality hardware and lock tight could be the difference between a serious injury and noticing a problem ahead of time should a brace crack or vibrate loose.

Glad to hear survivor stories yours sounds really painfully did a car hit you or a screw lock up your front wheel and flip you?
I had a rear brake lockup I was going about 26 MPH a short brake I just bought from REI that day I think it was meant for the front tire it grab into the rear tire came to a complete stop with a long drag mark almost went over the handle bars loud explosion brand new tube exploded rip the tire to s**t. Me okay sorry to hear about but glad you lived I don't wanna die on a bike either gives me some hope. Got picture of the helmet see if I got the same neck breaker.
Injuries sound catastrophic try product liability lawyer or put in your browser Scott Hardy Class Action Lawsuits they work for nothing if there a lot of bikes or try Law Tigers it's a law firm just for bikes and motorcycles, hope you get well glad you expect to walk.

Said it right in second paragraph, front fender came loose and jammed tire.

Unfortunately happens all the time in this hobby.

Inspector I'm just guessing about your issue. Too much tire pressure or tire not seated properly, maybe just an elcheapo tire.

SAFETY NOTICE
This is a Cheep $100 dollar Huffy bicycle from Wallmart
Notice the front fender has a center mount and one fender brace.
The center mount is bolted to the forks but the bracket is riveted to the fender. This is where it breaks.
The rivet pops off or the L bracket breaks and the front fender wraps around the tire.
You end up flying over the handle bars breaking your neck or worse getting killed.

If you have a bicycle with a front fender like this REMOVE the front fender for safety reasons.
If you want to keep the front fender on the bike.
1) Drill out the rivet that attaches the L bracket to the fender. Replace the L bracket with a stronger L bracket and use a bolt with a lock nut or use Thread Lock Tight.
2) Install another fender brace to the front of the fender use bolts and lock nuts or use Thread Lock Tight
Now the front fender is safe

A fender brace can be bought at a bike shop or on line they cost around $7
The goal is to have the front fender mounted in 3 spots.
If one mount fails the other two mounts will hold the fender un till it can be repaired. Preventing an ugly accident
It really dose not matter if it's just a bicycle or a motorized bicycle.
The front fender with just a center mount and one brace is a serious Safety Hazard. It will break it's only a matter of time.
I've heard one too many horror stories of people crashing on bicycles and motorbikes because the front fender broke.
In my opinion the design of the front fender being only mounted in 2 spots should be banned for safety reasons.

Question: Is it worse for the back or front wheel to lock up... I know its the front because that does the steering and control, right?
But how bad is it if the back wheel blocks up? Is that a big problem, wouldn't you just skid to a stop instead of front wheel where you flip over the handle bars....

Also, last but not least: I am really sorry Guest 778, I hope you get better godspeed.... I was in the hospital last year during christmas, yeah it sucks, i hear ya... best wishes
