Here's a quick comparison of electric vs gas bikes.

Going electric you pay more upfront, but it doesn't really need maintenance and tools and they are so much more reliable and efficient. Electric is quiet so you can take it on trails too. Plus unlike your cruiser, you can shift gears to make peddling easier uphills. Gas bikes are also harder to peddle btw because of drive chain resistance.

People get gas bikes because they are faster than electric and its fun to work on and make it go faster, and its the cheapest mode of transportation that you can still keep up with traffic.

Rough Cost Comparison

Electric bike
-$800

Gas bike
-$140 kit
-$50 oil per year
-$75 tools
-$30 maintenance/repairing per year
×5 years
=$615

I don't think you could go wrong with either in your situation unless you absolutely can't afford the electric bike.
Thanks for the info yeti woods ..I would definitely prefer to go electric for the pedal assist..and silent ride..I wanted to go with a bafang but I absolutely cant afford it.. even the numbers you posted for the gas bike is out of reach for me..I have been out of work since corona ..and haven't received any aid all my payments where put on hold for some reason.. so everything has been difficult..

You're welcome. They make even cheaper electric bikes too and they will keep getting cheaper in the future, look around on amazon or electric bike online stores.

If you have the pedal and motor sides geared correctly you can assist your engine to max rpm.
Thanks ..its great to know its possible I'm going to have to learn how to do that ..I would love to exercise under a light load for hrs..while exploring ..mixing exercise and fun is the goal..

Steve, You seem to be a nice guy that needs a little help. I tell you what I'll do for you. If you can find way to get my Margarita bike.
I live near Utica NY.
Its your for FREE........ I've been blessed in life so I'll pay it forward.
Heres the bike...... I put 3000 miles on with only 1 breakdown.. bad coil box.
Theres nothing on the handle bar now and it still runs GREAT !!

Welcome to the forum steve!

Most if these motors are made cheap (around 100$ shipped for the cheapest kit) BUT will need maintenance and upkeep.

How good are you mechanically?
Can you clean a carb? Can you diagnose a motor if it doesn't start?
Theses things are important to know.

Also, for your your weight, id also gear the bike lower (ie going from a 44t to a 48-56t sprocket) this will decrease top speed, but increase torque (you need this)

Id also get the bike serviced as well (local bike shop can do this, you could as well if you have the know how) as the motor will increase the stress on the bike, and the last thing you need is a failure costing money.

First upgrades, a better chain, maintenance, and finally a re gear and tune.

And its easy to learn how to work on these engines too, they're simple pedal start 2 stroke motors. I never did any sort of mechanical work before I got my bike. I was able to modify and fix every problem I had so far. This forum is awesome for information. You'll have a lot of fun with a gas bike its a great hobby especially since you're out of work, something fun to do and a skill to learn.

If you can't afford an electric or gas bike, you could just get a multispeed bicycle. The ability to change gears is a huge game changer when encountering hills and being a heavier guy. It will go from 10 out of 10 hard to whatever difficulty you want it all the way down to 1 out of 10.

Or you can change the sprocket on your single speed to a bigger gear, but you won't go as fast since you can't change gears.
