OK copper is better aye? or so you say.

Karl:
I like the cut of your jib! - Your info on the copper gaskets, and your method of annealing it is really neat! - No high tech equipment needed to perform a first rate job
I really like that!

I tired to listen to my elders when I was a kid. They usually had a good clue of how things worked, and I was always wanting to know what they were doing and why. I was pretty annoying( still am today) to most adults, but a few seen it as an opportunity to pass on some lessons and info. Saves a ton of money on heat pencils too, I use soap every day when I take a bath. lol. Only reason I use Irish Springs, I like the smell. lol, Otherwise I'm pretty sure most soaps will work the same.

Fwiw: the easiest way I've seen to anneal copper/ way to tell its annealed, is set copper on heat plate/skillet & slowly heat till you see copper color in gasket, flash off & gasket turns a rainbow color.
Electric or gas stove top burners work good too.

I like to hold up the copper gasket with a piece of wire and heat it with a propane torch. Then drop it in a shallow pan of water
Most all the soot pops off from the shock of the water . Then I clean up with steel wool.

I don't have an electric skillet Does it make for an easy clean up after ya let it air cool?

Logically one would think that
The quench method does work, I just prefer to have the copper as soft as I can get it for optimal seal. I have buddies that laugh at me because I wait all that extra time for a slightly softer ( and it's not by much, just I'm annoyingly picky, lol) gasket. Never had one leak though, so I stick with what was put in my brain as a kid. I don't think my buddies that quench have any problems, at least none they spoke of.

Yeah, I've done it both ways, air cool and water quenching

I researched it the best I can, and the general census is, it don't make a difference with 100% copper

Sometimes I'm not in a hurry and just let it air cool, The clean up isn't that hard

Now I think I need an Electric Skillet :ROFLMAO:

Save the soot for some jail house ink'n. lol. Oh man, the crap I did when I was young. I'm surprised I'm still alive. The tat is still there too. lol. Gel toothpaste, soot, water. It makes black ink. lol
