Turn signals & lights

A boat air horn, it will wake the dead and get any drivers attention. Signal gloves, they have LED lights on the back side for turn signals. Off and on is controlled by your hands uses replaceable batteries.

I try to plan a route that doesn't take me on streets that are... problematic.

I try to take neighborhood streets as much as possible.
Which is what I do as well along with avoiding rush hour times. I also do use wide shoulders and bicycle lanes provided they're safe to use. Some bicycle lanes are very poorly designed and pose a greater danger than they do a benefit.

When I was on Y/A Cycling I had made the cheapo brake and signal light capable of being seen in daylight hours. I often stated on YAC that I believe even pedal-only bicycles should be required to have communication lighting. I also said that if I, who's on a fixed income could build such a device a manufacturer should be able to an even affordable one. I'm glad to see these devices are finally coming out for cyclists.

Who knows maybe one of my single handed, color-coded, sequential shifting system may be showing up on manufactured shifters. This is the setup on the 3x8 pedal-only bike I'm building for my nephew. It has 13 sequential non-redundant ratios. Take-off gears are 1(1) for starts uphill and 2(3) for all other starts.

Red
1(1-5)

Yellow
2(3-6)

Green
3(5-8)

Here's what'll be in the display of the shifters.

Those are good in most places but not in the steep hill country. The left hand on most bikes controls the front brake. This is where any time visible fixed directional lights are a safer thing to use. Coming down a steep hill (15+% grade) with no front brake, one hand control and needing to turn left isn't a pretty picture.

I was on a pedal-only cycling forum before Yahoo Answers Cycling shut down; I used to think the same thing you're thinking. Once I started using Lane Control, mirrors, and being predictable. I find I'm in far less danger than I ever was riding to the far right in narrow lanes. Riding to the far right in narrow lanes encourages vehicles to a squeeze by on you. Using Lane Control causes vehicles to change lanes to pass like they'd have to do with any other slow-moving vehicle.

When I was a far-right only rider often vehicles would pull up beside me at STOP signs and red lights. Then cut me off with right turns. By using Lane Control my lane traffic is behind me and not beside me. Now, traffic stops behind me at STOP signs and red lights.

The incident you described is known in Cycling terms as a Right Hook. You probably wasn't seen right off or they thought you were a pedal-only bicycle and going much slower. Had you been using Lane Control the car would've been behind you instead of beside you at the intersection.
I was on a pedal-only bike, right next to Mr. Road Rage and clearly visible in broad daylight with no obstructions.
And can only repeat that if I did anything other than ride as far right as safely possible, they would do a hell of a lot worse to me than just scream abuse.

Video cameras are a great deterrent. You also need mirrors. If the people in your area have that high of a blatant disregard for traffic laws you need to move from that area.

He lives in Albuquerque, NM...No need to say much more...High crime area all the way around...There is no real regard for the welfare of others in Alburguerque either, one of the top murder capitals of the country too...I only go there if its absolutely necessary...Thats only been twice in the 11 years I have lived in NM.

I live in the nice and calm and law abiding area of NM...lol.

Neither video cameras nor mirrors will save me from hostile bumpers, violently opened car doors, thrown bottles or bullets.
I may miss out on a few of my 'rights' (....), by not insisting on them at all times, but at least I retain life and limb.
Moving currently not possible.

What do you all think about going Amish and putting a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back while using "lane control" Just thinking.....:ROFLMAO:
