Freehub is a generic term. Are you talking about a freewheel hub with an 8-speed freewheel on it; a cassette hub with an 8-speed cog cluster on it, or an 8-speed internal geared hub?

How many holes are in the hub you have?Thanks for the link — I may buy something prebuilt as a backup, but would still like to try my hand at building my own.

On my existing wheels I have 36 spokes.

That's good the cassette should be easy to remove despite the fact the hub was removed from the rim. If it were a freewheel may have had considerable problems with it.

No hub was removed from a rim. I want to leave my existing wheels as is and build a pair of wheels from scratch.

Yes, but I don't understand why that matters. I want to build a pair of new wheels with all new parts, nothing is coming from the old wheels. As per my OP, I'm just looking to source new parts. Was hoping the wheelbuilders could point me in the right direction.
