New motor, wont start, leaking gas. HELP!

😀😃😄 GUYS...... HAPPY DANCE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have taken apart carbs more times than I care to think about and this is the FIRST TIME it ever actually resulted in a RUNNING MOTOR!
OMG.... I'm NOT a total R tard. lol...

Now.... adjusting, will be ongoing as always, but if I give it full throttle it wants to die. I can EASE into full, but yank the handle, dead.
So what needs adjusting for that?

And I have the brass sealed air/fuel screw still sealed. I figure this ran fine last year, I'm not messing with that. Just the idol screw is the only other one I know to fuss with. Will be fussin later, hubby made a surprise stop home, wasn't suppose to be here till the weekend, so.... finishing the bike can wait. Hard part is done, it starts and runs. YIPEEEEEEEEE

.004" intake and .006" exhaust

also make sure filter is cleaned

The filter looked fine, air filter had a little gas in it but after it sat for awhile that mostly evaoprated. I do NOT want to start messing with intake and exhaust there. I really need someone standing next to me to show me exactly where top dead center is. I never could get my last motor running and I don't know why, but it became hopeless only after I fiddled with those things pictured. This motor is only a year old, shouldn't need such fine tuning.

I did twork on the idol a bit, still gotta find the sweet spot but it seemed to help some. Rode around town just fine tonight.

Yo GW, turn the feeler guage over to check the gap. See the bends in the blade? Using them that way works against an accurate reading/feel. Turning them over will let them rest on the contacts for a more accurate feeling.

After looking at that pic again, it's the light/shadow making the blade look bent. Carry on GW, you're doing just fine.

Ok, had it out today, after a hell of a time getting it started. Fired right up after I put the cleaned carb on, all of a sudden it doesn't want to fire up? Yargh! But I got it going, just buzzed around town a few times, and though it does run, it's running like crap. Lurching back and forth, and if I give it gas, it goes HUH THEN starts to go. Or wants to die. Gotta ease into more throttle. That actually started getting worse, so held off on going any further than I care to walk. In a few weeks I want to start making rides some 20 miles away. I do NOT want to be pushing this thing home.

So what causes this? I thought about getting a video but honestly, the lurching is more something you feel in the ride than would show. Possibly the sound of the motor, you all let me know if that is needed or if this is a common thing. I did fiddle with the idol, made no difference.

OH and if you all start with the adjust the valves thing again, I CAN NOT FIND TOP DEAD CENTER. I've read multiple posts, did the stick a straw in the plug hole thing, nope. And get that wrong, adjustments are no good. Totally screwed up my last motor until I finally gave up and bought this one. For that I really need a mechanic right next to me to show me. Again this ran fine last summer until I spotted the mount being loose and stopped riding. So I kinda doubt a motor with not even 100 miles on it yet would need that adjusted. Something else must be causing a sputter lurching movement like this. Maybe something is still clogged????

I'm a little confused. I just looked at this thread for the first time, and I haven't posted a single thing on this thread

Again, the trick to finding top dead center has alluded me. NOT messing with it.

I did discover my fuel filter is leaking a tad, need to order a new one. The thing did sit dry so possibly it's as simple as a gummed up filter, even though it APPEARS fine. Hard to see if fuel flows through as well as it should.
That's the easiest part to throw at it, so until I do that.....

to be continued.
