Help on Forks...

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem. I ordered a new 26" open spring front fork which should fit my bike great (and save my poor wrists, my hands vibrate for 5 minutes afterwards lol)

Problem is that it looks like there is no brazed brake mountings or anything like that.. is it possible to have mounts brazed on and where would I go to get this done?

I have very little cash, and I dont like the idea of the MTB spring forks, they dont seem to fit with the concept of the thing or the appearance...

any suggestions?

Drum Brake front wheel. More added cost, but surely less than having brake mounts brazed. Drums work very well also

*sigh*

Thats what the guy at the shop advised ... they have Anita now...

They are fitting the fork, with a new headset and putting a hub brake on (shimano) as well as putting a new wheel together thats looking to cost me over £100 :.( although apparently it should be better than the brake I have.

the fork itself is by a company called ridelow... see piccy

Money well spent! What good is 30 MPH without a means of slowing down?

Good luck and let us know how the new forks and brakes work out.

this might be a dumb question, but, which part of forks do you clamp the arm to ?
I have a drum hub and have been avoiding looking at springers because I didn't think they were compatible

That is a real good question azkronic. I would think the large tube, but I guess it would depend on the brake assembly. I have a grubee set from a couple of years ago. Front Drum rear Coaster(with sprocket bolted to hub) I believe that one would fit this style of fork.

on an off topic personal note: I follow the function over form theory. i LOVE my MTB 100mm travel hydraulic shock forks, I believe they are SunTour's. My hands and wrists have never been happier on a MotoredBike.

I just bought a drum brake hub for my coaster brake beach cruiser project from this place last week http://home.comcast.net/~ginnyrini/hubs.htm .
The prices on that site are incredibly cheap even compared to the bargains one my find on Ebay. The more I thought about how the speeds of these bikes might easily overwork the fabulous coaster brake, but wanted something different than the std rim brake setup, the drum just looks the biz and will work very well...safety first!:)
They were able to source SS spokes and all asscociated hardware for the switch from spool hub to drum and even offered to lace the drum hub to my rim for a reasonable rate.
Very helpful folks there!

Im not sure what you mean by the 'arm' but if I think its the thing you mean on mine they have clamped it to the frame of the fork... It looks fine although they have royally screwed up the throttle clamp on my bike *sigh* the **** thing moves around now *sigh*

As to whether it works, its ok, but I dont know why the bike is now terrifying to ride. It doesnt feel at all stable and is much more skittish at cycling speeds but then it seems alot better under power - alot less effort and I dont end up with MB elbow as its called.

I'll post pics when I get round to doing them - but the bike is now black with gold pinstripes & purple accents on the frame butts (the original colour) and looks ok...

Forks andBrakes

Seems to me Sheldon Brown has some comments on this topic. I had them tucked away, but trashed it last month.

Type Sheldon Brown into your browser, etc.

I would guess Jemma that the steering alignment (trail & etc) is different with the change over to a sprung front fork. You may now have less positive trail or even a wee bit of negative trail with the type of fork you are now using.
