Alright guys,
So me and my friend was super drunk last night and we started complaining about how it was to much of a hassle to drive in this small town we live in, but walking is just to much of a pain..... so we brain stormed and came up with the idea of putting a motor on a bike... We talked about a lawn mower engine and then decided no cause it was vertical mounted...

Well it wasnt till today that I relised lots and lots of people are doing this.... I was really impressed with the kind of flowing this hobby has... which is awesome.

My question is where would I get started putting a motor on a bike? I have looked at a few kits but most of them are just out of my budget, I honestly dont want to spend more then about $200-$300 not including bike frame. I am basicly just looking for something to cruise around town on when i dotn want to drive or walk... save the planet ya know?

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome, keep in mind I have no engine knowledge what so ever.. well short of a small engines class back in the 8th grade... but ya... please post dummy to me.

Another thing, sense I am a fair believer of quid pro quo (A thing for a thing) I would be willing to trade knowledge, I do web design and websites for a living so if anyone has any questions about that I wouldnt mind helping at all!

Or, if anyone is looking to set up a website of their own maybe we can trade out work for parts... Just some ideas or suggestions, thats all

Thanks in advanced!

A very good place to start would be the picture gallery ! Look at the different styles of motors and setups. Determine which one or ones you like best then search the forum for that kind / style of mounting.

That's a good idea...see what u like best and do a heck of a lot of reading on this forum.Get it set in your mind exactly what u want(eg,2-stroke/4-stroke/style of bike/etc) and the price your willing to spend then get back to us.With price add 20% to be on the safe side.
Normally the more money u pay the better off your going to be but it's not absolutely essential....great little Happy Times were made on a shoestring budget.

ok well I have started to look around for something that I could use for a frame... I think I can get away with this for about what im wanting to spend....

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4231518

is what I was looking at getting...

I dont really think there will be enough room to mount the motor on that frame what do you guys think? Am I right?

I see alot of people usign 10 speed type bikes.. is this for comfort or can you really switch gears? Erm and would this even matter lols sense your not really peddling!

My personal opinion is that your overly optomistic about putting an engine on that particular bike, reason being it's relatively inexpensive and has all the cheapest components.Your VERY likely to break spokes, crack the frame, break the hub etc, because it can't handle the power.Get something good and second hand...a well known brand name...preferably a hardtail.
If your going to mount an engine in the rear of a dual suspension MTB be prepared to spend money because the only successful way of doing it as a beginner is to buy a kit and kits are expensive.
READ MORE and get a better understanding of the challenges u face........forewarned is forearmed.

Alright!

I will look through stuff then and read a little bit more, I guess I am kinda getting ahead of my self, ya I found a couple decent kits that I might consider "entry level" just to get me started and if it ends up being something I like doing I will go all out!

I have a friend who is pretty good with metal as far as welding and bending it goes.. I may talk to him and look at building something "chopper" like which will be really fun!

Hey i'm not trying to discourage u man...quite the contrary.
I WANT to see u succeed...not be like some ex members that start a project and give-up because it's toooo hard.
All i'm saying is maximum homework now is going to pay-off BIG TIME in the long run. :)

I agree like 300%

I dont want to jump into something and then end up spending money and being upset cause somethign donst work, but honestly I feel I can handle this project rather well!

Check the thrift shops and garage sales. You will be surprised what you will find and the search is fun also. And less dinero!
