Rhode Island Motorized Bicycle Laws

A motorized bicycle is classed as a moped under Rhode Island state law. A moped is defined as:
  • Having 2 wheels.
  • A cylinder capacity of less than 50ccs (cubic centimeters).
  • Cannot exceed 30mph on a flat surface.
  • May be propelled either by human power, motor power or both. This typically encompasses motorized bicycles (with pedals).
License

A valid drivers license is required to operate a motorized bicycle in Rhode Island.

Registration

To ride a motorized bicycle on public roads in Rhode Island it must be registered, titled and you need proof of insurance.
