i really need to get it out so that when i've removed the rust i can use a tank liner kit. has anyone ever done this or similar ?

The tank definitely needs the love, I’d just feel stupid if I did all the body work and paintwork and had it be all rusty insideI'd assume that everything on that tank unscrews. How bad is the rust? You don't necessarily need to do a tank liner if it's just light surface rust.
I'm derusting the tank on my motorcycle that I rode as a teenager. The tank is just lightly scaled with rust on the inside. You realize that the oil tank part is completely sealed off from the gas tank part? The oil tank partition will also need to be degreased for the derusting to work effectively.
