49 cc exhaust stud removal

I have the 49cc 'Ghost Racer' 4-stroke, and I am looking to create my own exhaust system on it- the problem is the studs mounted in the head for the existing system... they are 2" long!!! I tried the standard vice grip approach, but couldn't get anything to move without what I consider excessive force. They unscrew, right?

They should unscrew; but what I did was thread 2 nuts on each stud, tightened them against eachother snug, then unscrewed the studs out of the block while it was still warm by using a wrench on the nut closest to block. I wouldn't recommend vice grips!
