49mm iron bore metal type

College is a waste of money unless you plan to go into certain fields. That was true even for my generation, and it has only gotten worse. I make almost double what a typical bachelors degree makes in this country. I have done some school, but it was all focused around the work I do for a 2 year degree and some certificates. I only took out a couple of student loans, and they were paid off within a year or so.

Yup. And it really doesn't take an educated genius to melt metal together.
Maybe not, but it doesn't hurt to have some evidence that you are more than the typical brain dead person converting oxygen to CO2. Do things that add value to you and make you look better on a resume'. Welding certifications are a good start, but if you can get an Associates degree that revolves around that skill set, you stand out a bit more. It's all about showing that you are intelligent and capable of completing that degree than what you actually learned to get it.

I'm seriously considering going through a government funded trade school, and then through an associates around welding, fabrication, and general construction. If I go through a government funded trade school and then go through a college they will pay for I won't owe anything. However I'm not sure I want to spend that much time on that. Perhaps just the trade school and start working. I don't need to make a ton of money, but I don't want to just scrape by either.

If I was going to continued schooling in your day and age or right now in Gordy's time in the sun, that is exactly the way I would be doing it right now College IS a total waste of time and money in this day and age unless it is med school, law school or your gonna be a rocket scientist, brain surgeon or "double naught" spy like Jethro Bodine...lol...lol.

This sounds like an awesome idea. Don't sit on it, do it. You get out of life what you put into it. Also, even if that path doesn't open up for you, don't be afraid to take a school loan or two to get that degree. It's an investment in yourself, an it will pay itself off quickly once you line up the right work. Finishing my degree opened me up to my current career path and within 18 months provided me with a position that saw a 30-40% increase in pay, as well as the ability to get a job pretty much anywhere.

I probably won't go for a degree. I hate the idea of spending 2 years for a piece of paper.

Gordy, listen to the advice you’re given. I used to think the same way as you when I was young. I spent 28 years in the army as master instructor for turboshaft engines ( helicopters) retired a command Sargent major. Doing consulting for bell helicopters. That “ piece of paper” is making me $285 an hour now. Listen dammit!

No, I did read it, but it's just not for me. The experience would be awesome, but I don't need all the extra stuff that comes with getting a degree (more English, more math, and other classes that will be completely useless).
