4hp briggs cruiser project

Update 3: I mocked up the set up for my jackshaft. I unfortunately bent the bearing pillow, but it seems to be straightened out now and should work with a chain and pulley belt. I have a rough idea on how to construct the idler pulley mechanism, but that'll have to wait till next week as I'm going on vacation tomorrow.

Sadly I tightened the Carb cable too much and snapped it. I'll have to get a new one. On the bright side I have a carb at my parents home so I'll stop by there on my drive tomorrow and pick it up.

I'm toying around with the idea for a kill switch so I don't have to keep shocking myself just to turn the engine off. I also need to figure out where to put foot pegs. The engine is very wide and doesn't leave enough room for pedals, which is why I removed them all together.

That engine is probably heavier than a honda gx120. I know you're going for a vintage look though. Soon i'm probably going to swap my 79cc for a gx120 and remove the governor. And use a mikuni. Does anyone know what size bearings they use in the gasbike.net mag wheels? I want to get Japanese bearings. Another addition would be figure put how to attach a rear disc brake to the rear wheel and then convert it to 203mm discs. A modified gx120 should carry the bike 45+.

No idea on the bearings, but if you want cheap, good quality ones, check out staton. I don't know how viable a rear disk would be since you'd have to attach the sprocket adapter. Keep us updated though.

Not really as the Briggs has aluminum casing like GX, what weighs up is the internals, crank and all. And are close to the same in both makes...............Curt

Update 4:

I'm back from vacation and immediately set to work fixing that damned jackshaft. It urked me how bent it looked so I dismantled it, redrilled the holes and put it back together. I also moved the gears on the jackshaft and engine farther down the shaft, allowing more clearance for my legs.

I replaced the new brooks seat that came with the bike with a 1964 dunelt bicycle saddle. I prefer being seated lower on the bike. It gives you a feeling of riding IN the bike as opposed to ON it.

I also bought a new set of hand grips and some piping to create a new set of handlebars. Unfortunately the bars didn't work out too well, but the piping came in handy to create a much better looking exhaust system. I was aiming for crossbar handles, similar to those on an indian powerplus, but oh well. I love the hand stitched look of the grips. Sadly, they resisted a bit during install, so I malleted them on. This resulted in a vibration that traveled down my bike into the rear wheel where a loose screw punctured my tire. Time for a change I guess *sigh*.

Aside from the tire FUBAR, the bike is coming out well. I hope to have a belt test and idler pulley system set up soon.

P.S. Does anyone have the following parts:

Crossbar handlebars or handlebars that extend into a parallel shape like on a powerplus bike
#41 chain
rear light/generator

It is a small but active bunch of suckers in the MB community. I bought the same cheap leather covered handle bar grips.
Thank goodness we didn't have to bid against each other.
As for handle bars. The one I bought for my Sportsman Flyer after much searching was the Wald 867 DSCN0766.JPG
I have considered adding inserted extensions. The cross bar turned me off for awhile. I have since gotten over it.

Damn, your bike looks so much cleaner than mine. Good job.

RocketJ , you have to remember, mine is a customized kit and I didn't deviate much to keep the pedigree intact.
And that is why Pat Dolan has been so supportive of my build. There are negative remarks about how Pat conducts business, by people competing against one of the best builders. And also a Bonneville record holder.
With a motorized bicycle. I am going from 1200cc to 79cc, the thrill is in the later. Keep posting your progress Rocket .

Pat and his products are great. I love the frame and tank he built for me. I don't know how anyone could hate on him.
