I motorized a huffy cranbrook and it’s worked great so far, but the brakes suck. The coaster brake assembly failed on me when I braked at speed. I know this is a common problem with these cruisers and I ordered rim brakes to use instead. However, at the moment I’m out of a rear wheel. I know the best solution is to replace the coaster brake entirely with a single speed freewheel. However I don’t have a lot of money and I was thinking of just replacing the coaster brake with a new one. Does anybody know if this would be a suitable replacement I can just put into the hub? https://www.performancebike.com/shi...al-kit-110mm-old-165mm-axle-y28698010/p315962

I replaced my coaster brake hub twice and they both broke. I don't recommend it unless you use different brakes such as rim brakes or disk brakes and don't engage the coaster brake.

That’s exactly what I plan to do (i have rim brakes) I would want a free wheel but I can’t seem to find any, but I found this and I think it might work. I just wanna know what other people think.

You can check craigslist for some wheels. I actually met a wheel builder through craigslist indirectly though, I didn't know he built wheels I was just selling him my wheel and he told me when we met. So it may be worth just even asking people who are selling wheels if they build them too. I got mine for $40.

I just checked my huffy cranbrook's stock wheels and I was surprised they're actually all steel and have 12 gauge spokes. I think I have the 2018 model.

Yeah the actual rims are surprisingly decent but the hub and the axel is a different story.

I'd say go for it then. Replace it with another coaster brake hub. Use good grease and really pack it in. I like lucasoil red n tacky, seems popular on this forum too and inexpensive and easy to find I saw some at home depot.

Tighten everything down tight. 20-25 ft lbs of torque for fork nuts.

As long as you don't use the brake, it shouldn't break.

A drum brake might be an option. Drum brakes are self-contained, so you wouldn't have to worry about bolting or brazing anything to your frame, and it'd be less prone to self-destructing than the coaster brake.
