Almost new engine not starting

The nice thing about spark plugs is that they are a relatively cheap consumable. The only time they aren't is when you get into specialty stuff built for high power, high chamber pressures in forced induction racing applications. NGK, Brisk, an Champion all make side electrode plugs for this, and they range from $35 a piece (Brisk) to $99 a piece (some NGK or Champions). Imagine doing that x8, and on a regular basis.

That plug design your showing at Autozone as a racing plug was originally marketed many years ago as one of the original "fire in oil" spark plugs manufactured for the express purpose of enabling a cars engine to still run despite the fact that it had cylinders loading up with oil due to maintenance issues that the motor really needed to be repaired properly but usually wasn't...lol.

Back in the late 70s they usually sold for $2.99...lol...lol...Now all you gotta do to get big bucks for it is to call it a "Racing" plug and you can get 70 bucks for one...lol...lol.

It's not the design that makes them cost so much. It's the material and processes. The plug threads are cold rolled, and the steel is a higher grade with more nickel to withstand the heat. It uses 98% pure copper electrodes, specialized plating, very high quality ceramics, and a more strict quality control. That design style is used because the standard style straps will glow white hot and sometimes melt or burn off after just one run. It also helps with igniting by having no shroud around the electrode. Those styles of plugs require very high voltage ignitions to function too, 50k Volts or more. They are not recommended for normal engines.

Turns out it needed new spark plug and cdi. just the spark plug didn’t cut it. Is there anything I can do to make this cdi last longer?? Or is it just a maintenance item?? Also I found out if I take the muffler cap off it has way more power. Kinda loud though😏. Also I’m wondering if I can power lights off of the white generator wire.

Glad you found your problem! Nothing really to make the CDI longer, just gap the plug to 0.025". Should last a good while, you probably got a bad one.
Yeah the muffler cap being off does make it sound real cool lol! I did that to mine when I was still running that exhaust.
And no, the white generator wire WILL NOT run lights. It would draw too much current from the ignition and result in a poorly running, or not running at all engine. And Idk if it would even run the lights AT ALL lol.

The standard CDI's are just cheap so they tend to fail or are just bad out of the box. Bicycle-Engines sells an upgraded CDI system for their Zeda line of engines that comes with Yamaha components and is probably one of the better units out there. The one that came with my Phantom 85 a couple of years ago is still going strong. I had it combined with one of the OZ 2 wire Super magnetos - no charge coil/white wire so the entire coil winding is just for spark which makes it stronger, and the coil winding is even bigger than standard on top of that.

The 2 combined make the strongest spark I have ever seen on a 2 stroke engine setup.

Unfortunately, it looks like both are sold out at the moment. They do look to have the CDI for sale with a normal 2 wire magneto (also an upgrade) for 30 bucks.

If I do another 2 stroke - which I am thinking about - I may give their new high performance CDI a try. It has a big dedicated coil on it like one found on most dirt bikes. https://www.bicycle-engines.com/bic...scharge-ignition/?searchid=0&search_query=cdi

half the cost of the engine on a spark plug
😱😱😱

How about the magneto? Do people do anything to make that stronger, or is China doll magneto basically the same as the ones on the quality kits?

The magneto most of them come with are just the bog standard 3 wire magneto.

The 2 levels of upgrade magnetos are - A: 2 wire (red black) where there is no charge/light coil so the whole winding i just for the ignition. B: The OZ Super Magneto is also a 2 wire, but the coil winding is even bigger, aka 2 wire magneto that went to the gym and got buff.

Oh I'm sorry, I meant the magnet that spins lol.
