After a little research, I wanted to post the results here.
Until fairly recently, alternative drive bicycles were pretty pricy. However, prices have come down so that shaft and belt drive bicycles are competitively priced. For instance, you can get beach cruisers for about $300, or 7-speed internal hub comfort bikes, with shock-type front forks, in the $350 range.

- Incline DirectGlide shaft-drive bikes start at about $300 for comfort bike with a 3-speed internal hub.
- Dekra Starts at about $300 for a shaft-drive 3-speed internal hub, and $350 for a beach cruiser w 3-speed hub.
- Dynamic Bicycles direct drive bikes start at about $650.
- I've also seen toothed belt drive bikes for less than $450.
