And now for something completely different!!

It was jsut a have a look at it, but the tank stoppers on the TF185 triples hit the stoppers on the FZ50 frame. Something Suzuki is known for as they use set points in the frame etc.

I also want the classic lines of an old curved Suzuki tank, maybe a TS100 or something
I'm wondering where the motor is going to fit. I'll just have to wait for the next installment. Well done.

I believe he plans to mount it under the frame
Yep, Pezz mentions that in post #37, here is the URL link to that below, that link also has a pic of the under frame possibility.

Well I've been a long time watcher and am now embarking on a rather strange project which may interest you.

A bit of background about me I run a motorcycle event in Australia called the scrapheap adventure ride which raises money for the Down syndrome community. I have been running that for 14 years and with the generous help of the scrappers have raised over $1.1 million.
I also have 2 artificial legs as I was run over by a train in 1976.

I have built a number of scrappers over the years including my XR460/4 and my Suzuki RV125 running a PE175 motor.

I also like to build other silly bikes and this is what I would like to share discuss and gather information with the group.

I recently purchased a complied Suzuki FZ50 frame which I want to run bicycle components on and ride to central NSW to an event I run called the Silly Buggers Ride. This is like Scrapheap, without the fund raising.

3 day ride for slow bike, lots of dirt

My Plan

I would like to run an 85cc 2 stroke engine with a Jack shaft and use the derailleur gears. I will be using a expansion chamber and quiet muffler. Open to suggestions as well. Reliabilty is a key consideration, so whilst tuned for torque wont be for top end power

Additional items on the wish list are electric start, a way too charge a battery and run lights and blinkers. I won't be riding at night but that will be a requirement for registration.

Motored bicycles are illegal in Australia.

There are so many items I need to get my head around including wheels tyres. I need tyres that can ride on dirt roads covering a distance of 762 kilometres each way over 3 days. in warm conditions. . . .

I will build a cradle that will bolt to the FZ frame and carry the engine, jackshaft and the swing arm pivot and rear wheel.

Plenty of head scrathing, designing and planning in this thought bubble.

Nah, not illegal. I dug right in. Rec registered plates available in Victoria with a list of compliance.

Must have headlight, brake light and tail light functioning, engine number, chassis number.

Lighting system must not be total loss.

Must have brakes independently operable if one fails.

Must have a chain guard.
No RWC required (read: no ADR)
To be inspected at a VicRoads inspection point with appointment.

To be operated by rider license operator only.

Can be ridden on non arterial roads, not highways or freeways, and not in built-up areas.

All other rider compliance apply, speed limits, helmets, Learner and professional plating according to license status, helmets, high-vis for restrictions, etc.

Sounds great as long as you live in Victoria and can live up to that list of compliances, not so great if you live anywhere else in OZ...The owner and administrator of this forum lives in Queensland and they are totally "Verboten" over there on highways and byways.

Had a catch up with a Scrapper, Dave, who also has MTB's

He suggested picking up oan old Kona Stinky and harvesting the running gear off it?

26" wheels. . . .

The Kona Stinky is a solid downhill MTB. I've owned and ridden two of them in the past.

I will mention that I broke a few spokes on my first one. I'm only a light rider but I was doing some rather large jumps and drop offs. I can't remember any other issues other than that. If I remember anything else about that MTB, I will let you know.

That's really interesting, did you managed to register a motorized bicycle in Victoria by satisfying those conditions?

I just had a look and there is somethings similar called "Conditional registration" in Queensland and it's available for agricultural, construction and recreational vehicles.

Under the list of vehicles that may have "Condition registration" it mentions the following:
  • forklifts
  • tractors
  • graders
  • harvesters
  • 2, 3 or 4-wheeled recreational vehicles.
I believe that a motorized bicycle could fall under the definition of a "2, 3 or 4-wheeled recreational vehicle".

It only costs $25/year, and I don't think you need an inspection in Queensland.

For anyone interested, there is more info here: https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/registration/register/conditional/about-conditional

No not yet. I have a backyard chopper build i am working on, made from a honda rebel. It's a project that has only just started and i will come back to this eventually if i get it or any of the motorised bicycles registered.

Hopefully i can take advantage of it before the loop is closed.
