Are gas MBs' necessary when compared to the performance of electrics? Owning
both, I am super impressed by electrics. They produce instant, quick torque,
quiet as heck and very good range. I have two electrics and both are
powerful. The 48volt 750 watt has five levels of throttle and I can
reach 16mph just on level one. On a 14amh battery, the range is
about 40 miles. No dealing with motors, chains, noise, clutch
issues, engine problems, just charge and go. And the big benefit,
is electrics are allowed on bike trails, where gas MB are not.
They are legally considered as normal bicycles. The explosion
of electrics available will continue, and the price can be
lowered by using easily available kits on Amazon.

Then one could argue are electrics necessary when compared to a $3000+ pedal only bicycle? They're considered a bicycle everywhere but many places don't consider ebikes to be bicycles. Many places ebikes are limited to a 20 mph speed limit. A $3000+ road bike can hit level ground speeds of 30 mph. You can also carry the bike up flights of stairs; try that with an ebike.

Personally I'll just stick with my gas powered bike that's worked great for 12 years now.

So all the fun parts then, an electric is good if you want some quiet time riding, but the tinkers need fuel.

Very few riders follow 20mph for electrics. They average about 25-30mph. As
for price, they are a little more expensive than gas: I paid $799 for my fat
tire foldable (battery included) which can be put in the trunk of a car by one person and
for my other electric I paid about $175 for the motor kit, but the battery
was about $400, if I remember - not bad for so much power.

This foldable bike is outrageous. Remove the battery and it's very
light, easily carried upstairs for an apartment dweller. Or put it
in the trunk of a car with the battery attached. Try that with any
gasoline MB. I have the better model with the S900LCD display
and 5 levels of throttle.

Watch this guy take the 36volt model out of his car trunk:

Old gear heads will never give up their IC engines and fuel. They may add an electric to their collection but the engines aren’t going anywhere. 🙂

Well that describes me. I own two electrics and four gas motorized bicycles. I
enjoy both but recognize the special features and benifits of electrics. I understand
after riding them why they are so popular. Very cool riding scenic bike trails of
Illinois and Indiana. Both federal and state governments are onboard with laws
to encourage the use of electrics. These bikes come in several classes. On
mine, I can program the top speed to 45 KM/hour which is about 27.9mph.
That's fast enough for me.

A good question...is gas necessary with the electrics today...

With an unbiased opinion at first look the electric bicycles ARE more appealing in several ways. They come fully factory outfitted and ready to go. Many have fat tires and cool looks. They' re totally quiet, strong torque, and adequate range on a charge. AND... there's no struggle to fit mismatched engines, exhaust, rims, brakes, and cables. No extensive engine work to extract performance vibe free rides.....basically no work on it to build.
Another plus is there's way less law enforcement worries with the electrics in this area.

With all this in mind.....I looked at the electrics for about 3 minutes before I bought my bike and engine knowing darn well a struggle was headed my way to outfit it. I guess I fit the gear head definition. There is nothing like the feel of starting up and ripping off on a fuel driven IC engine bicycle. The fuel bicycles are usually all unique one of a kind jobs. So many bicycles and so many engines to choose from.
The further I get in to this hobby the more I like it. It is very addictive....outfitting, tuning, and trials of different stuff. It's relatively affordably too.
Gas is necessary for some who love IC engines.

I'm old and will not see it but one day there will probably be all electrics. I just can not imagine the wizzz of all electric motors and no smoke in Indy, Nascar, Formula 1, motocross, drag racing, etc., ..... Wow..don't know if I'd like it.....like a big slot car track.

I guess we'll have to go back to putting the baseball card in our spokes. There will always be tire smoke in races, so we have that.

When I was on Yahoo Answers Cycling; the regular pedal only contributors there considered electrics to be for whimps. The only exception for having a pedal assist system was if you were physically handicapped.
