Back on the road

I did have another idea that wouldn't have been so drastic, but would still have been a compromise. What you have done will work fine and I'm sure you're not gonna die. If you ever decide to redo this use a longer tube and extend it all the way across in front of the tire and weld it to the fork tube on the other side. This will make it more solid. Just keep an eye out for any stress fracture cracks around your weld there.
 
The tensioner will wear out fast with the power side of the chain... Hopefully someone comes along and thinks it's ok because there's enough excuses for it... It's not mechanically sound ... Tensioner goes on the slack side of the chain... Preferably a roller bearing ... A skateboard wheel is going to be the best tensioner... mounting the engine low on the frame has it's advantage also ... Chain line is important...
 
I hear what you are saying about the tensioner. It has to go on the slack side. I rode it all last year on the return side. No problem. They are fine that way. Its not a big deal. 10th person to say it. Deleting my damn account.

I took welding for 2 years in high school, 30 years ago. Haven't welded since. We did gas and stick.

Get the flux core mig and some blue demon wire... Match the wire size to the extra tips you get... Some nozzle gel or antispatter is good to have...

I took welding for 2 years in high school, 30 years ago. Haven't welded since. We did gas and stick.
You would have to practice on some scrap pieces first. I watched a youtube video and the guy welded a expansion chamber type pipe with a stick.
 
Amps is the key, don't cheap out for the under 100amp model. 200 amp would be my choice.
To weld 22-18ga bicycle frames... A 110 mig is going to be running at it's almost lowest setting and mabe 20amps DC for $150 a 200amp stick is something for 1/2" or better thick even the smallest stick is going to be way more than needed plus the 220 service...

Duty cycle is what you look for in a quality welder... Why someone would get a 200amp welder to weld 1/4" because you can weld for a week straight on the lowest setting... But on a bicycle frame unless you're welding them for a living won't exceed the duty cycle of the harbor freight 110... Stick is more skill to get it around a bike and the mig can fill holes the stick will be forever doing...
