So yesterday I took apart the crank(?) assembly on my bike and removed one of the bearings. I was wondering, should I drop it in the parts cleaner and then grease and re-install it, or since I have it apart would this just be a good time to replace it. Here's a what it looks like.

Just kidding, you don't have to answer that question. What I actually want to know is how to find the right bearing since there are no numbers?

Here's one I took off of a scrap bike that is the exact same bike model. I wanted to take a ride and was mad I couldn't, so I greased it and installed it even though it was rusty but by the time I got back and took it off it was clean as a whistle. (Compared to what it had been.) I don't want to use it long term though, because I had to really heat the assembly to get it apart because it was all rusty.

Those ones you pulled from the scrap bike should be just fine to run as long as you grease them good. I like to use red n tacky or just high speed wheel bearing grease.

You might have some grit from a chewed up ball bearing to swipe out too...I noticed that the old loose bearings have only 8 left over...The newer ones in the cage have 9 still intact.

Take what you have to a reputable bicycle shop and they can get you the bearings and cage you need.

Get a few more individule balls (check ACE Hardware also) and do not use the cage. Just grease 'em up good so they stick as you load them into the cup. I have never used the cage since this also happened to me many years ago.
