Making Exhaust gaskets,
Some exhaust gasket material can be hole punched and cut out.
Other gasket material requires a little thought and planning to cut it out.
I use Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal Exhaust gasket sheet material 1/16" x 10" x 10" it's Graphite with a steel mesh center. Around $15
What works for me the way I cut it out,
I screw (sandwich) the gasket sheet between two pieces of wood the top piece is 1/8" panel board and the bottom is 3/4" press board.
I have laid out a grid pattern on the panel board so I can fit as many gaskets as I can on the gasket sheet. I can make 20
I use an OEM gasket to trace. I mark the center of the Exhaust hole on the panel board. I drill a guide hole
I then drill out all the exhaust holes with the correct size hole saw. 1" in my case.
Next using the OEM gasket I line it up with the exhaust hole I just drilled. I now mark the bolt holes, I then drill out the bolt holes.
Now I remove the exhaust gasket sheet from the wood and I trace the outline of the OEM gasket for all 20 gaskets
Using my mechanic (scissors) sheers I cut out the exhaust gaskets. I clean up all the edges and holes with 120 sand paper or a round file if needed.
I made 20 about 13 years ago and I have given many away to some friends. Now I only have 2 left It's time to make some more.
That's the last thing I want to worry about when working on my bike is an exhaust gasket. It's better to have too many than not enough.
Tip: When using the hole saw don't use too much force, cause the hole saw will rip through the 1/8" panel board and plunge into the gasket grabbing the steal mesh center and F^*king it up. Just drill with light pressure and let the hole saw do the cutting and you'll be fine.
Drill a pilot hole for the hole saw pilot hole drill bit
Tip: When drilling bolt holes start with the smallest drill bit and work you way up to bolt hole size.
