Hey there...:) So we're going to do this one properly..!

Originally, I was going to go with a dedicated board track racer, but this idea became a little too cost prohibitive. With the frames at around $350 USD, that would be almost $500 by the time it got to Oz. And that's not even with the tank. In reality I was probably looking at around $1k AUD just in the frame..!So what I've decided on now is a hybrid street/board track. GT-5 frame with double springer front end, board track style bars and seat set up. Best of both worlds..!

The idea is to have quality parts and running gear throughout, sourced from both bike and motorcycle brands. This thing will be fast so it has to be safe as well - plus it's not exactly legal to be riding these things on the street where I come from. It will be built around a Fred's Superhammer that I got customised with a 6cc decomp head, 17mm Delorto style PHBG carb, and RM80 exhaust. I live in a flat coastal area at sea level, so it will be turning a 30 or 32T sprocket - see how we go. Thinking of a dark frame colour (gunmetal grey??) that will be offset with anodised gold running gear and parts.

Anyway, here's a list of parts and specs with some photos of goodies I've been sourcing for a few months now. The frame is still around 2 weeks away but the hold up will be the forks. Anyone know where else apart from Bicycle Designer I can source Cuda Double Springer forks from..??!

Cheers
Crisco:)

  • Crankset: Sugino RD2 Messenger 165mm 44T with sealed BB68

Check out these springer forks. Google classic cycle double crown springer forks. I want them BAD. Way expensive, but DAM.

Ive seen those, I cant justify the money plus I don't like the look of the jointed pipes. I'm not going for a 100% reproduction I'm going for a retro look. I want mine to look vintage but also look modern at the same time. I want people to think "is that original?" But at the same time think "no that cant be original"

Well I wouldn't go with the jake handle bars. I bought them last night only to get my money refunded to me an hour ago. Sent a email asking why no reply. I hit up HBBC who makes the handle bars, they want more money for the handle bars than Jake does but they are out of stock. Down side is they are listed as 7/8" bars which means they would never have worked with my VO threadless stem I bought with the 1" adapter inserts. So now I am on the hunt for a 1" handle bar that will look good like these bars would have.

So anyways...
The more I think.. then look.. then measure.. then think harder.. look harder.. measure my other bikes.. and then ponder... the more I realise these bars are not going to work.

They are inverted Moon bars. Probably super comfy when mounted the way they are supposed to be mounted. However, in an inverted position they are going to push my arms waaaaaay too far back unless I have a 400mm stem..!! It's probably hard to tell from a photo but they are nearly 800mm wide by 400 deep.

They may need some chop chop action. See AutoCAD .dwg below.

Ya, those are pretty big bars, a chop saw or angle grinder with cutting wheel would make short work of it, but you can always spend a day and use a hack saw with a couple new blades.

I live in the 5th largest city in the US with everything 'around the corner' but at least me for, I can take in a handlebar and swap for any other used one for free.

Do you have local 'ma and pa' bike store near you?

I've got the gear to cut the bars down... Definitely won't be a hack saw though..!!

Loads of bike shops in this town. Some worth mentioning and some not. My LBS is currently building some bombproof hoops for me.:) Shouldn't be too far away now so I'll post some pics. Will give the boys a gratuitous plug once they're done too..!

Come to think of it... they are a ma and pa shop, just a young ma and pa. We don't really use that term in Oz either... Sounds like a shop that has a gimp in leathers chained in the basement à la Pulp Fiction..!!

I am about 1/8th of a mile away form Try Me Bicycle Shop.
My dad bought me a bike there when I was like 7, 50 years ago and it's still there.
Great little place, and darn handy for me.

So my Sunlite Double Springer arrived today. Gotta say I'm glad I made the choice..!

Heavy duty tubing and welds look to be high quality. The disc bracket and bottom plate look nice and beefy too. Might upgrade the jewellery and throw in some nylon bushings, but apart from that super smiley on this one..!:)
