Does anyone know about the brake light specifics for CA law. Can the red brake light be "on" all the time or does it actually have to switch on and off with actual braking action?

It's a tail light if it doesn't switch on and off with braking. On my bike I've got the following lights: head, tail, brake, front and rear signal lights. My state ( Tennessee ) doesn't require me to have any rear lights. However I've got them for my personal safety.

Try searching through past post in the Lighting, Electronics section first. I'm sure you'll find a way to make a brake light yourself. It'll be a lot cheaper than paying someone to do it.

My next installment on "the $5 headlight revisited" sticky will be about the switch for said brakelight- but there are brake handles for an electric scooter that have the switch onboard and fit bicycle handlebars for about $22 a pair- if you are running coaster/front brake on a monospeed, you only need one handle.
Currently doing the research to PATENT a brakelight switch for COASTER brake.
