When I was a young lad... I rented a room from a Korean-American. Wade is a great guy (we're still friends). He taught me that "oriental" was an offensive term when used to describe people, etc. At the time... I had no idea I was being offensive calling someone "oriental"...
He'd say "oriental is the rug. Asian, man..."
It only took a couple corrections and I got it. My mom on the other hand... never did.
Oriental simply means Eastern, whereas we are Occidental or from the West...Thats the truer meaning of the words...Oriental was never a word that was supposed to be offensive, it just ended up that way for some reason unkown to me.
Ah... but something isn't any less offensive to someone else ... if we're not offended.
There are PLENTY of things I am not offended by that others will/can take offense to.
Hell... that very thing can be applied to your very job here. Vulgarity is non-offensive to me... yet you filter. I don't give you a hard time about it even though "it's not offensive to me!" because I am aware that what is or isn't offensive to ME doesn't necessarily apply to others.
I even apply this... personally... to the truly dumbfounding... like wanting to be referred to as "they"...
While I find that crap as stupid as stupid can be... I am not them and if they prefer I call them "douchebag" ... I'd do it.
I don't do all the filtering myself...There is an automated system pre-programmed for most of it...Anton and I manually handle what the filters don't...lol.
During my cop days, I never took offense when I was called a PIG...I always thanked them for recognising that I possessed Pride, Integrity, & Guts...lol.
